Sturm: Marinelli Report - Finding Playmakers

"I kind of wonder if this keeps looking like this if 98 (Crawford) is best played at the LDE spot with Maliek Collins and Terrell McClain inside and DeMarcus Lawrence on the other side."

I think this is worth a shot. Crawford isn't doing anything inside.

Either the NFL has to start calling pics or we need to start using them a hell of a lot more

It is probably easier to call them more if we want the benefit.

Rub routes are not going to get called unless the blocking receiver does something stupid like pull up and brace for contact or does not run through with acting out the part.

The teams that run the concept well even use officials as part of the activity. So they are not cheating per se. They are exploiting loopholes like a good tax attorney.

Bad thing is, we either can't or won't practice them enough. It is probably why we struggle defending them, we don't see them much. The coverages also matter, nobody is going to run them against zone coverage with any regularity. The key is the DBs recognizing it unfold and hit the man it is intended to free up and get him off his mark. Takes practice to run them and also defend them.

It is just crazy how many people don't understand it and just want to assume it is just simple cheating.

This play alone made the investment in Durant worth it. Just a clutch veteran play that someone like Hitchens would have been flatfooted on.

That was an incredible read. That is nothing but instinct.

That being said, there is a lot of 'leniency' in this regard, particularly for those that run it as a staple....

Great play by Durant but also great coverage by Scandrick on that play vs the slot WR. This was a 4th and short so you know primary targets are likely on the shorter routs. All in all this was a very heads up play by the defense in general.

He was pretty soild inside last week and created some good pressure

I only watched the game once, and could be wrong, but I didn't remember it that way. The DL gave up 4.8 YPC and regularly failed to get pressure. He never stood out to be as being disruptive, outside of the sack. FWIW, PFF didn't score his performance well, despite the sack.

I really think Baker, Jackson, and pass coverage coordinator Eberflus deserve a ton of credit. Coverage in the middle of the field has been a humongous liability for the entirety of the Garrett regime. Ryan, Kiffin, and Henderson had charges that looked unaware and reactionary. These guys have players that are repeatedly running under routes and otherwise making plays on the ball all over the field. Guys help each other in zone coverage.

As the Sturminator points out they don't have the horses but there is hope for the future. Competency goes a long way in today's NFL.

I don't think the 4th quarter was all that much of a mystery vs NYG. DL play was bad with Collins getting pushed around and Mayowa could not keep his feet and was getting dominated. hitchens forgot how to manage his gap assignments too.

So, in your estimation, the zone coverage has improved this year. That's good because, in my opinion, zone coverage has been their Achilles' heel over the past few seasons, even more so than pass rush.

Didn't realize that Byron Jones was playing CB on right side on this one, with Church playing single-high safety. Interesting
