Sturm: Morning After - 3rd Downs Sink Season

Thanks Bob.

Except for every word of your assessment--I thought the offense was entirely efficient.

No way they let Moore on the field until the end because on the slim chance he produces or God help us even wins a game the entire organization is under indictment for missing it and costing us the season.

For instance, the Cowboys had 12 offensive possessions on this rainy afternoon. On only 2 occasions - both set up by big runs from Darren McFadden - did the Cowboys march the ball all the way to their own 40 yard line.

Disgusting.

As usual, great analysis.

I've always said that football is a game of 3rd down efficiency and field position.

We simply can't win like this.

They had 10 possessions on Sunday where they could not get the ball to their own 40-yard line.

That sounds even worse this morning than it did watching it yesterday.

The offensive scheme is terrible. It really just flat out isn't working.

Pretty tough to judge the offensive scheme when the quality of the quarterbacking is as poor as we have seen this year.

The one thing I will say is that the offense has way too many isolation routes and not enough combination routes to free up receivers. As it stands now, we have receivers who can't get open and a QB who can't get the ball there even on the rare occasions when they do. That's a bad combination.

Combination routes help receivers gain space. That's what you need when receivers can't get open on their own.

2016 NFL Draft, possible Coaching changes especially Offensive Line and Scheme changes really should be coming.

For a team shock full of good character and talent...and greatest of coaches...they simply suck.

Hard to believe they complete all those passes on 3rd down and yet get stopped short every single time short of the stick.
I'm not sure you accomplish that even if that were the goal.

We just listed seven 3rd down situations and there was not a single incomplete pass listed (save for the reversal of the Bryant play). Cassel's throws all seemed to be fine in those situations, but for whatever reasons - route running, defensive tackling, perhaps throws that require comebacks - they were gaining yards on 3rd down, but always 1 less than they needed.
This isn't new. On 32 drop backs on 3rd and 7+ this season, Cassel has completed 21 passes.

For only 7 first downs.

........you lost me with "greatest of coaches". But I'm with you on "they simply suck".

I am not so sure that WR aren't getting open. They may not be running free but I have seen enough of the all 22 to see that we have open WR on nearly all pass plays. The QB chooses to throw the safe throw. With Weeden, I think he was just scared to let it rip. And with Matt, after his first game and 3 picks I think he is hesistant and that is killer for a QB, he has to see it before it happens and get the ball out before the WR breaks. He seems to be late on a lot of this throws. Bad QB play is not the entire reason our O has sucked this year, but it is a very large part of it.

Both players broke open and either selection would have been appropriate (although Cassel knows which one will get him in earful on the way back to the sideline),

While often true, Dez isn't the kind of guy to give an earful whenever a play goes well.
