Sometimes we forget just how we got here.

It can happen, as in sports, the icebergs move slowly and the gradual developments sometimes sneak up on us all. You didn't get in this spot overnight, but sometimes what is true now wasn't true just a month ago.

In this particular case, the story of Tony Romo must be reviewed. The very well-compensated, 34-year old, franchise QB of this era of Dallas Cowboys football had seemingly played his best football in the years when much of the rest of his roster was not built up enough to win. They put massive amounts of leverage on his shoulders, and would ask him to stand in, take a hit, and make a play to make up for the other portions of the organization that had short falls.

(on the interception) If Romo throws that pass with proper technique then the pass isn't so flat and has the proper depth to get to Dez further into the endzone. Then nobody gives the DB credit for "baiting" Romo. The guy was just lucky it was a poor throw.

Loved the article Bob. Wanted to know if you have already noticed Murray not as fresh at the start of the Texans game...as he had been the first 4 weeks.

I think it's important to note that Romo is currently the 8th highest paid QB in the league under:

1. Aaron Rodgers - 22 million per year
2. Matt Ryan - 20.75 million per year
3. Joe Flacco - 20.1 million per year
4. Drew Brees - 20 million per year
5. Peyton Manning - 19.2 million per year
6. Colin Kaepernick - 19 million per year
7. Jay Cutler - 18.1 million per year
8. Tony Romo - 18 million per year

Romo gets more than the following high profile QBs

9. Matthew Stafford - 17.666 million per year
10. Alex Smith - 17 million per year
11. Eli Manning - 16.25 million per year
12. Andy Dalton - 16 million per year
13. Phillip Rivers - 15.3 million per yar
14. Ben Roethlisberger - 14.664 million per year
15. Tom Brady - 14.12 million per year
16. Sam Bradford - 13 million pe ryear
17. Carson Palmer - 8 million per year

It should be noted that Phillip Rivers has 1 year left on his contract, and is a free agent in 2016.

I would say that we got a pretty good deal on Romo.

And because Romo can still occasionally defy the Xs and Os on a play like that was surely dead, and because he also has a team-mate playing Wide Receiver in Dez Bryant who would equally defy the odds and make a play to win the game, the Cowboys wake up this morning with the 4-1 record, or said differently, the best record in the National Football League.

Romo's deal was the going rate but it wasn't good.
There's just a lot of overpaid QBs in this league.
And most of those teams are struggling to win after committing tons of cap space to those players as good as they are.

The guys that have won SB did so on their previous contracts it seems.
It is tough to win with a franchise QB cap hit.

That's because they built up defenses and run games. You can really do it either way as you can see with Brees and Rodgers as well.

I think next year we have the potential to do both.

Whatever you sacrifice to pay a franchise QB it counts.
In BMore they lost Boldin and some defense.

QBs always look better with more pieces around them.
No one questioned Brady with Moss/Welker and a good OL.
Now his lead Wr is Edelman... yikes.

Eli is basically a middle of the road starter but he has more rings than his brother.

If Denver had Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril last year instead of SEA I am not sure the game doesn't go the other way.
The difference in cap cost at QB might well have been the difference in that game.

I'm sold on our 'new' triplets and their abilities to get the job done.

Thanks for such a great narrative Mr. Sturm...they always are an entertainment truly given to perspective.

I'm really enjoying what is being coached up on the defensive side now.

Is the goal to get there or to win?

Rodgers cap number when he won the SB was 7.75M.
Brees was on a previous, far cheaper contract when he won his.
Flacco was on his cheapish deal.
Russ was paid nothing.
Eli won both his earlier and his second came at a cap number under 10m.
I haven't done all the research yet but I haven't seen a QB win a SB making more than a 12m cap hit.

Dallas best bet may be a reduced cap hit for Romo next year to free up money for help.

You cant win unless you get there first.

And that includes the last 2 years of the contract at 20m per year. It was essentially a 4yr/68m(17m a year)extension that began this year. Very fair in terms of money and length.

Good snap shot on team developments around a crawl, walk, and then run quarterback.
