Sturm: Morning After - Weeden's Last Start

article of desperation. its cute, but go out and say what it really is. Be honest, waht does it hurt to be honest?

Good read, thanks for sharing. Hard to find anything to disagree with here. I think you nailed it. In my mind, the failure is on the organization to not recognize Weeden's limitations and move in a different direction at backup QB. I know everyone says "nobody has a quality backup QB in the NFL." My response is this, and be honest. Do any of us really believe that Weeden would have a job in this league outside of Dallas?

"Here is why I hope people read this part of my conclusions carefully, rather than merely a headline. This is not about blaming Brandon Weeden for being Brandon Weeden. The Cowboys knew what he was and obviously were rationalizing to themselves the premise that if any contender loses their "QB1" for 2 months, they are going to be in big trouble, too. That might be true, but this isn't "any contender", this is your contender. The Cowboys watched Weeden in camp in 2014, again in fill-in duty in 2014, in the offseason of 2015, and in training camp in August. On each occasion, he repeatedly checks-down and doesn't show any patience to let routes develop or any comprehension on reading a defense. Yet, they didn't really seem to attempt to go in another direction because they were betting that Romo would be fine."

This is the issue.

The NFL is a 16 game season, everyone means something. For the front office to think after last year and this year's preseason games, that Weeden could fill in for Romo is just about one of the dumbest decisions they have ever made. Even with Dez playing, Weeden would still not be able to run an NFL offense. He doesn't have the brains or the guts to play the position at this level. I would love to know what person on this coaching staff and front office thought this was the best solution if Romo were to be injured. Witten and Romo are not getting any younger, by make such an obvious bad decision, you now put pressure on Romo to have to basically win out should Cassel stumble in the beginning. And if we fail to make the playoffs, it will be another year wasted of Witten and Romo. I don't think Witten has more than 1 or 2 productive years left. He is really lost a step with the little speed he had. Just a real shame if we miss the playoffs this year based on this backup QB decision.

This much should be obvious to anyone who watched football and has half a brain

Many of us have known the back up QB was a top priority for this off season because Toni is getting older and has missed games almost every year for the 2-3 and weeden is a waste of a roster spot but out FO and HC have refused to address this issue

Cassell should start
If I'm Garrett j also tell CMike that if he practices hard and shows me what he has, he can start against the Giants

Pretty reasonable, overall.

We did reportedly show interest in Shaun Hill in the off season, too, but not enough was done to backup the QB position, no doubt.

Seems like the logical call, but there will be things Garrett will consider.

1. Does it matter if Dez returns? Might having Dez give Weeden an offense he can move?
2. Did the 7-7 and a TD against the Giants last time in relief mean anything? Might Garrett ride Weeden one more game simply because it is the Giants and over two years Weeden will be studying them for the 4th time and because he had success against them in week 1, including a nice deep slant to Williams?

I'm not saying Weeden shouldn't be benched; I'm just saying facing the Giants after the bye, and possibly with Dez, might give Garrett a reason to at least see how the first half goes. If Weeden gets benched, it will be an encouraging sign that Cassell is actually showing something in practice.

However, remember, turning to Cassell isn't just about him knowing the playbook or not....will he have any chemistry at all with receivers who can't get much separation? Will he read their body language and the way they run routes enough to anticipate and put the ball where it needs to be in order to avoid interceptions? I think we may see a change, but it's not as easy a decision as many think.

Weden is a flawed QB for sure. There is a perfect storm going on of bad predictable play calling and formational tells as usual from this offense. Weden isn't going to cover up the faults of the offensive play calling like Romo does. Just like in many ways, the tentative (and indecisive) group running backs are not covering up a running game that is utterly simple, predictable and poorly called in game.

Weden will take the fall for the last 3 games and while he is part of the problem, the coaching staff is a bigger part of the problem to me. Not to mention, who thought Weden was the answer in the first place. I'd like to see some accountability in the FO & coaching staff rather than the typical "players didn't execute" line that is forth coming. The coaching and play calling was terrible yesterday.

Weeden didn't face the Giants, he faced the Eagles.

Not really, Sturm accurately pointed out that Weeden can't read defenses or wait for plays to develop, this has been the case prior to Dallas and witnessed in training camp. Having a deep threat receiver doesn't mean much if the QB is a dump-off deer in the headlights.

Weeden's not going to get any better and defenses have figured out how to stop him and our no-mistake 3&out game plan 100%. Got to change it up and give Cassell the best chance of being prepared by anointing him as the starter today.

My bad....the Giants play so much man coverage, I was still seeing that deep slant.

Screw it, then, hang him! Burn him at the Stake! Bench the Bum!

Mr. Sturm...now that was a great read.

Pure football with very good description of points made.
