Sturm on Jaylon Smith

Goal of this draft needs to be drafting this guy. They traded up for that jag claiborne, they can trade up for this beast.

Normally I am against trading up but I think you have to hit on a LB - our depth chart is ludicrous. If this guy is not only a day-1 starter type but a stud starter type and heir apparent to Lee, then yeah, they should do it. Safety isn't too far behind, but they could at least put Byron back there if you have better LB play, or sign a guy like Reid.

We’ve almost pigeon holed ourselves into having to take 1 at pick 19.

Vander Esch will most likely be our pick.
Totally agree. Can pretty much guarantee it's a backer or a DT
it's one if LVE, Evan's, Payne or praying not one of hurst/bryan

I'd rather trade back in the 1st round than trade up. Come away with 4 picks in the top 81.

The time to trade up is in the 4th round - using both picks to get a 5th player in the top 100.

I think I would rather keep our picks at 116 and 137 but get even more in the 4th. If you look at our recent 4th round picks like Dak Prescott, Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson, you can also see the argument for keeping our 4th and giving up some of the comp picks to gain another 4th round pick.

The 1T was never getting blown off the ball and making the LB reads tough. not with Paea not with Price not with Ash not with Collins. They were already covered.
Maybe but dont we want a 1t that demands a true double team at the POA

This kind of stuff is largely why I grow to hate the local media covering the team.

Jaylon Smith was ABSOLUTELY better at the end of the year.
That he was better BECAUSE HE PLAYED LESS and in LESS STRESSFUL situations was ALWAYS A GIVEN.

You don't need a project to discover that, unless you were busy studying and discussing hockey.

Anthony Hitchens just made 9.5M per year and Sean Lee is a Pro Bowler at 85% health.
OF COURSE Jaylon Smith coming off 18 months of inactivity was best suited to back them up.
This time last year people were swearing he WOULDN'T EVER TAKE A FRIGGIN SNAP.
Those people are summarily dismissed from all discussions going forward because he has proved them MOST clueless.

Jaylon Smith may never be a starting quality LB. It's fair to question that.
But it's also insane to say he can't make a huge leap from marginal back up to starter given he went from can't jog to marginal back up in a year.

The only thing worse than the value of the pick for Jaylon Smith knowing he was likely 24 months away for being 100% would be forcing a LB pick at 19 because of need.

He didn't make NFC Defensive Player of the Week last year.
Only DLaw did in week 3.
You are correct. I must've confused that with the ed block award he got. Either way I do agree that we need LBs. If we can go into the season with Jaylon being the weak link of the lb corp instead of the cornerstone then we'll be good. That goes for Sean Lee too. They both can be outstanding but I do not want to bet the season on either of the two's health.

:hammer:
Apparently he did some film study on Jaylon and determined that he didn't really improve late in the season and that the Cowboys really need some LBs. Rafael Vela who used to run the cowboyszone.com website and was one of the best writers in Cowboys land apparently hated the pick so much that he retired lol. This offseason has been 85% discussion about the offense, but this is the worst unit on the team and the defense still is the thing holding this franchise back. 100 Dez threads a day, but this is the real problem.

No no sturm and vela are plain wrong

NFL Defensive Player of the Week? I am not aware of this but for the sake of discussion, what do you believe that suggests?

Not the regular NFL Defensive Player of the Week...Peter King picked Smith as his defensive player of the week, for the last week of the season, in the demolishing of the Eagles backups 6-0...and King spelled his name wrong lol...

I like Jaylon personally, but man, I REALLY hated us picking him when we did.
He wasn't even in my top 30 remaining players at that point.
Just SO many studs left on the board with no career threatening injuries and imminent red short seasons
Still, he's such a good dude, I hope he gets it going and has a great career...for him and us.

Michael Thomas
Hunter Henry
Leonard henry
Myles jack
Noah Spence
Deione Jones
etc

oh well
Hindsite stuff

Pretty sure if he gets paid it counts as an accrued year. IR or not.

Per Article 8, Section 1 of the CBA, a player who spends the season on the NFI list like Smith did, does not accrue a season. There was confusion during the year when the Cowboys opened the three-week window in case Smith was ready to play. Some thought this, combined with Smith receiving full pay for the season, qualified 2016 as an accrued season, but that was not the case.

Per former agent Joel Corry, nothing changed about his status as he never made it onto the Cowboys 53-man roster.

This means if Smith returns in 2017 and plays in full for the duration of his rookie deal, he’ll be a restricted free agent at the end of his deal in 2019.

I think there is a real shot at Tremaine Edmunds dropping to 19 and then us being able to to Darius Leonard or Shaquem Griffin in the 4th. But I totally agree with your slotting of a 1 and a 4.

Trading down is a real option too with guys like Rashaan Evans and LVE taken in the late 1st or the early 2nd.
If we could get Edmunds and Leonard that would be a dream but I just don't think Edmunds will drop that far. Getting Leonard in the 4th would be a steal. Another guy I like is Cichy from Wisconsin but he has injury history. Would not mind taken a flyer on him in the 6th if he last that long if we don't get lbs earlier.

Jaylons on the field rookie season:

-Came back from major knee surgery, and did not suffer injuries
-He began to trust his legs more and more as the season progressed
-Showed improvement and better instincts as the season progressed
-He was not a first round pick, even though he was top 10 talent

This defense is going to be awesome to watch. I am finally excited again about the cowboys defense. This secondary, jaylon, lee, taco, dlaw, irving, collins, maybe gregory.

I know everybody is probably tired of hearing this but honestly, this is why we need to bring in a quality 1Tech IMO. I mean, we do need more LB depth. Losing Hitchens was a big deal IMO. Drafting Jaylon and betting he would be an impact player was a huge risk. Lee is not getting younger and Wilson, a pick I loved BTW, is not getting it done. He should already be at the point of solidifying his role as a starter on this Defense and instead, he is screwing around with suspension etc. A better DL interior who could actually protect our LBs would be huge for this team. I know this may not fit the "more LBs" idea here, and believe me I do agree with the idea that we do need more talent at LB, but I just can't express how important it is to have quality DTs who can cover up your LBs, especially when you play undersized at the position. In todays game, you almost have to go undersized because you have to have LBs who can cover. That puts you at a disadvantage against the run. If you have to always send undersized LBs against Bigger OLs, then we are never going to have enough quality depth.

JMO
We need help at LB but the addition of a good 1 tech helps all the LB’s, allows them to flow to the ball without traffic and helps keep them healthy
That’s why I’ve been opposed to adding another need at WR
Our first 3 picks need to be 3 of the 4, LB, G, NT, S depending on the quality available

I’m excited to see what Smith can do but we still need a LB because of Lee age and health
Even if Smith can return to form we need a LB or two
