Sturm on Jaylon Smith

Carters name is floated around as well.

And I think safety is actually more of a pressing need than LB. But unless we can somehow get James, I don't see any other first round safeties.

Some mocks have Reid in the late first. Some have Reid in the third. Bates seems consistently a top half second guy.

My ideal would be that James somehow slips to 16 or 17 and we give up a fourth to move up and get him. But I think he goes way before that.

Plan B is moving down a few spots. Picking up a fourth, maybe a third. And then getting Evans.

Then if Reid is still there somewhere in the top part of the second, give back our extra pick to get him. Or Bates. Or sit tight if you think one of those two will fall to you.

Then look for a 1T in the third. And Oline in the fourth.

Now, if we dump Dez, things change.

Well, here's my take on this. I think safety is a need, just not at 19. The reason for this is because I like what I see with Frazier and Woods. I think Frazier is turning out to be a good FS, and I think that Woods is developing nicely at SS. Also, while I have bagged on him in the past, Heath has actually developed nicely as a safety. Furthermore, if your front 7 is terrific, then your secondary will fix itself. It's a bit like on offense. If you want your WRs and RBs to succeed, then you need a solid oline and a solid QB. Same with Defense in regards to the DL and LB. If your Oline and QB are good, then your RB and WRs will sort themselves out, or at least should be able to. Our secondary wasn't dreadful last year. The problem was that, outside of Lee, our LB sucked and our DT position was horrible. Fix those 2, and I think our secondary can improve on its own. Though, watch for Holten Hill with our other 4th round pick. I think he's another good FS option.

I think, as far as safety goes, Holton Hill is flying under the radar a bit too much. I think that he could be a steal in round 4 along with Fred Warner. Get those two, and I'd call the 4th round a success.

Completely agree with all that.
LB has a lot of question marks.

But Dallas played 2 LB 67%~ of the time in 2017 and may play even more now that they have a young box safety in Frazier getting regular snaps.
Dallas has:
Will: Lee/Thomas
Mike: Jaylon/DamienW
part-time Sam: Wilson

So they've already got 4 guys playing really 2 spots.
Do we really want 6 quality LB to play 2 spots?

Or we do we need a 3rd starting caliber guy and then roll with that?

If I drafted Evans, he would be my Mike as soon as possible. Smith my SAM. And depending on his health, I'd get him snaps at DE in passing downs. So all three would be used extensively.

Then you have Thomas and Wilson as your primary backups.

Just how I'd do it.

Can only agree with sturm.

At the end of the year smith was given more blitzing plays. He just rushed and thats it. In those situation if the play came his way he looked great of course. Otherwise he contributed nothing.

He was very bad against the run and didnt contributed much against the pass when played like a normal Mike over the course of the season.

I still hope he can contribute at the sam position. He is not the Mike we need. Maybe he will magically evolve into one this offseason but i dont see it.

To me in our defense he looks more like the Will would be his natural position.

Translation...I did not like the pick then, so I want to be right. Sturm is still talking about Zeke being a mistake too.
Also known as: The Dallas Stars just fizzled badly in hockey and I need to remind people I cover the Cowboys so here goes a hot academic take.

Sturm's Cowboys takes and coverage went downhill as the team moved it's flagship station and Sturm became paid to work other sports primarily.

Me too.
And I 'think' Evans is in play at 19.
But I'm not sure if Evans would beat out Smith at Mike in camp. Likely, but I'm not sure.
Lot of ask as a rookie to start at Mike.

Mike and Sam is an open comp for me in camp.
Will is obviously taken but I want a back up there who can play.
Last year the team listed 3 SAMs on the depth chart which imho is goofy.
I don't need more than 1 SAM that can't play other LB spots.

:hammer:

Full off season of non-injury workouts, OTA's, training camp, preseason....you know the things that help you play better.

I certainly hope that he's where we need him to be. With that said, we still need to get more LBers. When was the last time that we were actually confident in our LBs (besides Lee)?

The problem with sturm is that people need to actually read and try to understand what thought he trys to talk about and what he writes regarding this context.

You are right since he joined the dmn he is not that good anymore. Still he is so much better then 99% of the other writers out there. Have you ever read btb for example ?

This was the take last year in JULY on Jaylon Smith... so 9 months ago... none of the Cowboys staff writers thought he'd be more than a role player.

6) 20 Questions: What Are Realistic Expectations For Jaylon Smith in 2017?

Helman: Far be it from me to determine what Jaylon Smith is capable of this year. That guy has one of the best work ethics and by far the best attitude I have ever seen. But I’m the type that needs to see to believe, which is why I’m keeping my expectations modest. Smith is still recovering from a devastating injury. He’s not all the way back, and even if he was, he hasn’t played real football in 18 months. I imagine the Cowboys are going to ease him slowly into training camp, just like they did during OTAs, and see what he can do. I don’t expect his workload to get bigger until he proves he can handle it, and I don’t even know what to expect from a real game. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he’s healthy enough to carve out a role for himself. But right now, in mid-July, I expect Anthony Hitchens to be the Cowboys’ starting middle linebacker, and to get the bulk of that work.

Phillips: Fans hear Jason Garrett’s ‘day by day’ assessment of players all the time, but for Smith, it’s really the best way to describe his road back to the field. He’s been grinding for a year and a half, day by day, to play again. The grind continues. There’s no guarantee he’ll be an every-down linebacker this year. He and the Cowboys truly must see how he progresses each day, each week. With the foot brace, can he outplay Anthony Hitchens, who quietly has become one of the defense’s most consistent players at middle linebacker? That’s a fair question. No matter what, you have to admire Jaylon’s attitude and his progress with the athletic training staff.

Broaddus: I have never wanted to be more wrong about a player than Jaylon Smith. There is nothing to hate about Smith. He's a hard worker, he’s physically gifted and his teammates love him. He comes to work each day with a smile on his face and a plan in mind. It's no secret that I was against the selection when it was made. In my extensive research before the draft I didn't get the impression that he would be able to play again. For Smith to be in the situation now where he's working toward being on the practice field in Oxnard has exceeded any expectations I ever had for him. The staff will be smart in how they use him and as I suggested post minicamp, if that's as a two down player to start then that could be the best route. Where he's going to struggle is in pass coverage until he gets a feel for the brace and how he's going to function in those situations.

Eatman: I feel like every question this week has been somewhat difficult to answer and this one is no exception. I know the fans are eager to see him and everyone in the organization is the same way. We all want to see him healthy and just how good he can be. I have my doubts that we will be able to see him at 100 percent this year. That doesn’t mean we won’t see him at all. Just like any player coming off a knee injury, they’re not going to be as good in the first year back as they’ll be the following year. My expectations are that Smith will play at some point in the preseason and then will have a limited role early in the regular season. From there, we’ll have to see how it goes and he responds from playing football for the first time in two years. I hope he comes in and plays lights out. But I think they’ll be overly cautious with Smith to the point that he really won’t be turned loose until later in the season or even next year. But again, it’s progress. He might turn out to be a superstar. I just have a hard time thinking we’re going to see it sooner than later.

I loved Sturm when he first got to DMN and the work he did prior on his personal blog.
But he's moved to The Athletic now after parting ways with DMN.

Sturm is a sports junkie much like myself and I respect that but you don't hold down a full time Stars broadcast gig then be great at writing Cowboys articles.
His actual writing is quite intelligent but he no longer has the same feel for the team he did when he was breaking down scheme/sets stuff weekly.
Like a lot of folks his life has taken different roads and he doesn't have the same time or energy for this stuff IMHO.

I wrote Cowboys articles a decade ago and understand as same happened to me.

I loved his blog too. I didnt know he left dmn. I was just wondering why there werent any articles by him lately.

I do understand that there are alot of demands when you write for a newspaper or someone else who is paying you. Still i miss the way he used to write on his blog alot.

However i still think high of sturm. His structured approach and his detailed view is something i have respect for. And i dont think he lost that talent. He just has to earn his money too.

Until now i really havent found an alternative for him.

The Myles Jack angle will rear its head again but note Jack is playing SAM and Nickle backer as well. He wasn’t the solution at MLB either.
You keep saying this but 75 percent of the time the jags are in nickel. Who is the mlb then? It’s not 220 pound telvin Smith

Me too.

Would you tinker with moving Lee inside?

Would you tinker with moving Lee inside?
I wouldn't. Just don't think his body can hold up.
Now if he gets injured and I start two other guys I might use him as the top back up to both when he returns and let him take over whichever position was performing worst but I'm not starting out with that idea.

If you do have a rookie Mike or even if you have Jaylon, Lee being next to them is the best gift in the world.
He's not only lining up the entire defense, he's telling guys exactly what play is being run.

Apparently he did some film study on Jaylon and determined that he didn't really improve late in the season and that the Cowboys really need some LBs. Rafael Vela who used to run the cowboyszone.com website and was one of the best writers in Cowboys land apparently hated the pick so much that he retired lol. This offseason has been 85% discussion about the offense, but this is the worst unit on the team and the defense still is the thing holding this franchise back. 100 Dez threads a day, but this is the real problem.

Sturm is generally good; however like many media types that follow the draft, he will tend to criticize a player if he was against the pick from the beginning.
