There are few things about the 2014 season more interesting to me than the season of Rolando McClain. I remember being in Oxnard and watching him as closely as anyone not named Tony Romo (major back concerns to observe) and wondering about his past, present, and future, as it pertains to the NFL and the Cowboys in particular.

They were without Sean Lee, and seemingly, due to Jason Garrett’s relationship with Nick Saban and Jerry Jones’ ability to wow Rolando with a direct call, were investing any hope they had in the defense being respectable in another professional football player who had not been in a game in 22 months.

In August, it was tough to tell what to believe about McClain. First, because of studies on draft-able players, he had the reputation of a destroyer in the middle of the field going back to his draft class. We knew the quality was there. He was only 25, so this surely wasn’t the case of pulling someone out of retirement who wasted their prime years. He should be right in the midst of a All-Pro career. Yet, he was barely seen at training camp. There were explanations of health and conditioning. Then, days later, there were questions about whether he really wanted to be here. Then, the rolling of the eyes from sources about “it is always something with this guy”.

Good read, as usual.

Sometimes tangential things stick out to me in an article. Such as this one:

Jerry Jones’ ability to wow Rolando with a direct call

This is Jerry Jones' extreme value to the organization--his ability to lure talent to Dallas. He's a world-class salesperson. Its a shame that this value gets overlooked because Jones wants to be known as a football guy, which is ridiculous.

I was an assistant coach on a college basketball team and I just cannot escape the "Ro" kind of guy. They are on every team. This is the description--

GREAT talent - a game changer
Charismatic personality
A leader who other players look up to on the field or court
Coaches and players love him - infectious personality
Basically a good guy

But - it really is always something
Cannot string practices together
Nagging injuries seem to keep them out of games
Never does more than his his talent allows (extra practice or weight room work)
Not a leader off the field or court - more within themselves
Trouble seems to find them

So how do you handle a player like Ro - you keep him and hope for the best. The positives outweigh the negatives because the talent gap is so big. Maybe that's not the case with the Cowboys at linebacker but I would still want him.

Me personally, I don't take the chance on Ro. History proves there is always something with him whether injuries or personal.

I would take a minimal chance on him with a reasonable deal. Let's be honest here. As good as he is what team is going to overpay with his known reliability issues?

I am on the fence, his concussion issues on 2 consecutive weeks when we needed him the most is more worrying.

I doubt his cost will be that high. All teams are going to be leery with his past and the missed time last season. But with the long layoff he had without an offseason - no wonder he couldn't stay healthy.

That's very true. His past will have an effect on any team that looks to sign him.

If we do keep Ro, and Sean Lee returns healthy and STAYS healthy, I can see him having an impact on McClain. It has always been said about Lee that he has the ability to bring out the best in players. Leadership by example and it's contagious around the LB corps. We shall see.

If we can keep him here on a reasonable deal, then I would do it. The guy brought a physicality to this defense. He might have went out in the play-offs, but he was critical for us getting there in the first place.

Interesting to think Carter will be cheaper then Rolando. If thats the case noway should Carter leave Dallas. Especially if he think 4mil is too high for McClain.

These people aren't going to rest until they find some thing, some reason, some way, some how to deligitimize, devalue, destroy, dehumanize, and deconstruct this guy. And then they can pat themselves on the back and be the first to say "I told you so".

Spare me the "evaluate all the players" BS. It's been going on since the day he walked into Valley Ranch.

Bob, Thanks again for posting these here. By no means did I mean to suggest profiling players out of the Cowboys' reach was a waste. I will literally read a thousand profiles like this if you post them.

I like that you have started with disruptive pass-rushing ends since we desperately need one. I also agree with your take on Rolando.

A few questions...
Will this just be draft guys? Or will your profile possible free agents when we get closer to the free agency period? (Translation, please do these on possible free agents when free agency begins)

You mentioned before 100 draft profiles. I'm really hoping to see write-up's on TCU's Paul Dawson and Wake Forest's Kevin Johnson, especially in regards to what they might add to the Cowboys. Will they make the cut?

I was ok with him until his house burned down...I think there was bad things behind that so that was the tipping point for me.

Joking...Joking

But You do have to wonder if we should continue with a walking wounded LB Corp. I have a feeling we might so it leaves them more open in the draft.

I would rather keep Carter even if the price is 4-5 million.

I think you pay 4 million. Give him a shot.

I think he will mature a lot over the next couple years.

I have watched Dez mature into maybe the best WR in football...

I'd like to see McClain get a deal similar to Melton with a big 2nd year raise. Only, instead of it being a team option, have it tied into playing time. So if McClain plays 75% or more of snaps, 100% of year 2 is guaranteed. If he plays 50% to 74%, he gets half of the year 2 salary. Something like that.

Jerry Jones: I look at anything [Rolando McClain] dealt with injury-wise as a part of the rehabbing of getting back in the groove in the NFL
