Sturm's take on T. Smith today....(with video)

The haters would find something to scream about if he pancaked someone on every play. Just ignore them. Those claiming that he looked terrible are a joke; people who have PLAYED OT in the NFL like Ross Tucker say other wise.

Fans in general don't think an O-Linemen is dominating because they get this idea that you should make a dozen pancakes a game and always get to the second level. Those don't happen all of the time.

FWIW, Tyron Smith is ranked #7 overall in Gosselin's top 100.

How can you possibly know that? :laugh2:

Simple. He isn't physically gifted enough to have much more upside. The best he can do is play smarter.

You know, one thing Jerry said yesterday that I don't think he was fibbing about was that a top-10 pick isn't a developmental player, that he needs to play now. Now Tom Ciskowski talked about how any rookie is never completely ready and has to grow into the job as he plays, but still, what Jerry said makes me think maybe they do prefer Castonzo.

About the top 10 pick thing, FWIW Goose has Smith at number 7, and I thought he made his list based on talking to NFL personnel people?

This is the consensus of what goose has heard from coaches scouts and gms. BUT each team looks at it a little differently. That is why some rise and some fall when draft day comes.

Just about every U$C friend I have says that Tyron Smith is not NFL ready. That the potential to be great is there, but were looking at 3 years down the road. And to not expect him to start this year. He simply could have used another year in college. They also tell me the real talent on the oline was Kalil. They can see why Matt K will go high in the draft next year, but find it kind of laughable that T Smith will be going potentially top 10.

Here is the thing. I thought this team was being built for a run at the SB now. So I was assuming in the draft JJ would be looking for a guy who is plug and play. Doesn't seem like this guy is plug and play.

I thought the same thing when I heard that too.

Ross Tucker, who played NFL tackle, says otherwise. So have others with actual experience.

I've been crying for young offensive linemen for years now and despite the fact that we are in prime position to take the top OL in the draft, I don't think any are worth #9 overall. At this point, I would rather trade down and grab a tackle in the middle of the 1st.

I do not care for Smith at all and I am probably in this extremist minority because I have Smith rated as the 4th best tackle. If I had seen more of Sherrod, I might have Smith rated even lower. Tyron just struggles way too much for me and like Solder, his guy just always seems to make the play. At least with Solder you could say he's only had a couple years experience on the offensive line and has room to grow in technique.

That wouldn't be the first time, lol. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong. I thought Jerry Hughes was going to be an absolute stud and he had what, a total of 3 tackles for the Colts?

Cleaning up technique and playing smarter can work wonders for some guys.

The athletic upside may not be there, that doesn't mean he's as good as he's ever going to be.

Maybe so but that's exactly what some "experts" said about Free. But if Garrett decides he can't play I understand picking OL. But that doesn't change the fact that there are tons of OL in the league who were low round, UFA types. Some of the very best in league history and in our franchise history were this type.

Why we would waste a top 10 pick on a RT when it's been proven year after year that you can get them anywhere in the draft is beyond me.

We got a very good LT for next 10 years in Free with a 4th round pick. Consider ourselves lucky! Miami had to use the #1 pick to get their LT.

War is won in the trenches. The better our OL is better RB and QB play. History tells us that 1st round OL is a better bet than ANY other position. It just happens we need OL help. Why mess with getting cute and HOPING we get someone in 3rd round and beyond and HOPE. Pick solid football players and build this team.

Sorry, but you sounds like a lottery player..we can't draft that way.

I didn't say he was as good as he will ever be now. I said probably after this season he would be. Carimi is a smart kid. He has pretty good technique now. I think within a year he will max. (maybe 2)

He will sit at RT for several years to come and for a big bruising running team like the Giants or Steelers, I think he would be a great fit.

Carimi will have trouble with edge rushers. This is one reason he will always only be a RT. Carimi will top out as the best he can be in the next season. His upside is already realized. The guy is a bulldog and I like that, but his strength is running only. In today's pass happy NFL, that is going to be his downside.

Smith will easily be a better tackle than Carimi and every NFL scout / coach knows this. That is why nobody considers drafting Carimi before Smith or Costanzo.

I don't believe he has topped out, or will in the next year...I believe he is an extremely hard worker and will get better and better. I will not argue that Smith has a higher ceiling...not many will debate that, but will he ever hit that ceiling is the concern. I understand why you see it the way you do...looking at potential and if it pans out you are right, however if it does not we wasted a high pick for someone that flakes out. I think Carimi is a sure thing. I think he is a very solid pass rusher and don't buy that he's not, and a bulldog in the run game.

......NO such thing as a sure thing, especially in this draft. That's why this is all so perplexing. I watched Wisconsin play alot and they didn't throw all that much. When they did, they have such a mountain of men up front that average roughly 315 each that NO college dline could handle them. Interestingly, the smaller, quicker TCU team gave them the most trouble all year. Just want it to END and I'm back thinking a trade down to get Carimi, or Castonzo is the way to go.

Admittedly, Smith gets beaten often in those videos, but watch the videos of Castonzo and Carimi and you'll see them get beaten repeatedly as well. I know we need an OT and I'm still okay with taking Smith, but I find myself leaning more towards a defensive player in the first round and an OT/OG in the 2nd.

Castonzo vs. Quinn makes me want to draft Quinn. :laugh2:

Just picked out the first Smith thread I saw... But Todd Archer is on 103.3 right now and just said the Cowboys staff described him as "remarkably unintelligent", despite his 26 wonderlic.

That's one reason he thinks the Cowboys will take Castonzo.

Good find CL. Would make sense, too. IIRC, he had an academic suspension early in his USC career
