If we base things on just that one preseason game, he won't make it to the practice squad. There are a lot of bad QBs in back up roles in the league.

I'm not buying that. He was a 50 percent passer (two were dropped, though) whose only standout moment was the play where he escaped a sack and lobbed a ball to Mayle on the run.

We always like to project that teams want our roster rejects, but I saw little reason Saturday for teams to want to poach Showers. He might give them reason as we progress, but it wasn't there in the first game.

Frankly, if I were to consider adding either of the last two QBs who played in that game, I'd be looking harder at Mannion than Showers right now. Mannion threw an interception but also was 18 of 25 with three TDs. He's also a second-year pro, like Showers. Mannion, though, isn't likely to be cut ... and I'm not sure Showers is because Dallas might want to carry three QBs. I'm just saying that I wouldn't carry three at this point, but there's plenty of chances for Showers to change my mind and prove that Dallas can't get him back to the practice squad.

This gets overstated by every team's fanbase. Everyone sees their 3rd and 4th string QBs make some good plays, and they think every other GM is as excited as our fans are. Every team has a project QB they like a lot. I don't think there is any team willing to give up a roster spot on Showers.

But you're wrong. Romo has spent the entire offseason with Showers, and reports have been there that he's making huge strides over last season. Now, you add Prescott.

Because of Romo's frailty, you have to treat your 3rd QB like he's your 2nd, because he could be in a flash. Showers knows the system better than Prescott right now.

While there is some reason for optimism it is too early to say we even have 1 adequate back up QB let alone 2

Let's see how things play out the rest of the preseason

"Adequate backup" is an oxymoron. The NFL is loaded with craptastic backups that can't do anything.

I'm interested in "future starters". I'm done with the whole veteran backup thing because they never are worth a crap.

I saw good things from both, but it's way to early to be anointing either backup QB our future guy. It was one preseason game. One or possibly even both could end up being starters in this league. I'm not ruling it it -- especially Dak. I'm just not jumping to conclusions after one preseason game. I'm looking forward to seeing them play more. If they keep this up, I'll start to get excited.

I liked what I saw from Showers, but I still wouldn't put him on the 53 man roster with the way Prescott played. An extra roster spot is very important to this team at positions like RB, WR, and DL. Dallas and the rest of the NFL prefers 2 roster sports at QB, unless you think a project QB isn't ready for the backup spot. It may be early, but Prescott looked like he is ready for the backup spot. Dez Bryant had a lot of respect for Dak after the game. Having the confidence of your teammates can't be understated when evaluating the backup position.

Showers wouldn't even be a roster consideration if Moore hadn't gotten hurt. Now, some seem to be feeling like he's a sure bet.

I have no problem keeping him on the roster if he shows anything similar to what Dak showed Saturday. If he proves he belongs, give him a spot. If he doesn't, then put him on the practice squad and save that spot on the 53 for another position.

I like Showers, I just don't think his draft pedigree or what he has shown on the field would make any other team want to poach him an put him on their 53 man roster. Put Showers on the practice squad and continue to develop him, but the team should wait to bring him up to the 53 until Romo actually does get hurt. They did the same thing with Moore last year. Unless you think Showers is noticably above Prescott as a current backup, or you think Showers has higher potential then you can put him on the 53.

Just my opinion but I'd let Prescott play a lot in the preseason and much more than anyone else. That was no fluke the other night and I know it was just one game. If Dak continues to impress and Romo goes down during the season, let Dak play. Its all you can do. Also, if Romo gets injured for more than a game or two I'm done with him anyway. I also don't want an injured Romo out there trying to play simply because he's Romo and thats what this organization will do. IMO Romo is one good hit from being done. His back is still bothering him, they've stated this, and he didn't look that good last year when he was supposedly healthy. I think his back is worse than they let on. I love Romo but I think he's about done. I know this won't go over good on this forum but that's what I think....

Dare I say it? Somebody's got to say it. I'll say it. Jameill Showers might be better than Dak Prescott.

The beauty of that statement is....who cares one way or the other?

All the love for Dak is real and it's deserved these past few days. What a night the rookie had. But if you watched closely, did you see the ball fire off of Showers arm? Did you see the velocity, and the tightness of its spiral? Did he not look like.....Dak Prescott?

Preseason doesn't say much. But you can't fake poise. You can't fake courage. And you can't fake natural talent. These two guys have those things.

Showers suffered Saturday from playing with dudes that soon will be walking playbook in hand with the turk to the coach's office. He was thrust into the game with guys named Broderick that we'll never see again. Pass protection consisted of five matadors and a slab of meat around his neck. I'd like to see Showers with the ones because I'd bet he does well, too.

My favorite thing about Prescott and Showers is that they are following Romo around and badgering him with questions. They both really look up to Romo. They think the world of him, and he seems to get a kick out of them in return. Both seem like football film junkies just like Romo, and they're not interested in just winging it like so many young QBs are. They want to seriously learn the NFL game, not just rely on their natural talents.

Consider this, too. They have similar games, which are very suited to back up a guy like Romo, who moves well in the pocket. Orton, Weeden, and Cassel were nothing like Romo, so the offense just kind of shut down when they went in. Prescott and Showers are more suited to pick up where Romo left off in an emergency.

Is it wrong to say I'm glad Kellen Moore broke his foot?

Because of Romo's health questions, I'd keep them both on the 53-man roster. Who knows if one will have to backup the other soon. Hopefully, that's an insurance policy that never gets cashed, but until we know, we don't know.

Isn't it nice that maybe, just maybe, football beyond Romo in 2-3-4-5 years is in place at that position. Just maybe.

And what if we just watched the Rams and Eagles trade away their drafts the next two years, then watched Denver outmaneuver Jerry for Paxton Lynch.....only to see Dallas take the best QB in this draft in the 4th round. What if that lingering albatross just got nixed.

Maybe we just found Romo out of nowhere yet again.
Good write up and we'll watch these guys develop throughout training camp and the following training camps to come until Romo can take no more. It's very relieving to have some hope for our future and I think your spot on between the Dak and Showers. Ok check the "back up QB" box.
Now let's figure out what to do with our defense and our depth. I hope Jerry's minions are on the waiver/trade wire for anything and everything we can get for upgrades in those areas. A nip and tuck and we might have a pretty good team this year.
