My mom was a chain smoker for years, and refused to stop despite pleas from our family. She finally stopped in 1996, when her doctor told her she had cancer. Her last smoke was right before walking into the doctors office that day.

When she got home that evening, she took all of her cigarettes, cases, lighter, everything, threw them in the trash, and never picked up another cigarette again.

It's amazing how the mind can overcome an addiction that fast, especially when faced with such grim news.

I hope she's okay today?

Similar story for me: 27 years smoking, up to 2.5 to 3 packs a day for the last 4-5 years. Ended up in ER not once, but twice in about three month period. Determined to be the near-onset of emphysema...lungs were getting to be a mess.

I had no choice: I had to stop immediately, and I did. It was incredibly difficult but I felt I had no choice...smoked out for a lifetime. That was only 232 days ago...last September.

Chantix helped. Toothpicks help (for me).

Ironically, just coming back to Dallas, TX recently has been hard because so many places still have smoking inside. I'm in a bar pretty much every night, and still don't smoke, so I reckon I'll make it :)

Sure wish these Texas towns would get a clue though and make the smokers go outside in bars and restaurants.

That's a cop out. The mind can overcome the physical cravings if allow it to.

Easier said than done. I was able to quite drugs and drinking easier than smoking and I know quite a few others who will say the same thing.

It is easy. The mind is a powerful tool just waiting to be used.

I know that but I also know the reality that it is easier for someone to sit there and say that than it is for the person going through it.

One of the best, unsung comedies of all-time.

Two different statements. The first one is False. The second one is True.

I don't care if you call it physical, chemical, emotional, mental, or spiritual addiction... quitting smoking is not "easy". Calling it such is being disingenuous.
