I question whether you know why they got that nickname. I'm betting you don't have the foggiest clue.

Take a good long look at the TV ratings for Cowboys games versus all other games. Take a look at how many times we're on national TV. You know how the Prime Time football can swap a game? They did last year for a Cowboys game. Every other week the network owning the Cowboys game held it.

The public has grown, the appeal still lives.

Still the same brilliant star, still the great colors, still a huge following.

Yet the best movie in America right now is a cowboy movie. The magic of the frontier and the old west never dies.

Yeah, you really hated the sexuality of the Cheerleaders. Or maybe you did. What would that suggest about you?

Is anyone else as offended by this as I am? Tom Landry was a hypocritical Jesus Freak and so were his assistant coaches? I think I'll send this to Mike Ditka and see what he has to say about it.

I had a team come to within 80 miles of me. But I love the Dallas Cowboys. I love the history and the past. I love them when they are good and when they are bad. I know I'm not alone either. Thousands and thousands of out of state fans exist in every state still to this day. Can any other team claim this many fans without a playoff win in ten years? Not even close. The lure of the Cowboys might not be the strongest its ever been, but its stronger than any other club can claim. I guess that makes us "Americas Team".

The packers, the Patriots and the Saints were all supposed to be the "new" America's team at some point...yet the ratings always show that the Dallas Cowboys are still America's REAL team.

Rick Telander wrote an article entitled "How a Nation Lost Its Team."

I strenuously object to the portrayal of Tom Landry as a hypocritical "Jesus Freak." That is quite insulting. Moreso by the fact that Mr. Landry is dead and cannot defend himself against this kind of libel.

I wonder what Mike Ditka will think about this label when I send the context of the article to him?

How this stereotype and label got past your editors is beyond me. It is insulting to me as a Christian and a Cowboys fan.

His article was so full of errors that It shouldn't be posted anyway. I can look past the errors. It's pretty hard to look past that insult of a dead man who was not only a very good man but a hero in World War II.

Nice job Mr. Telander. I'd label you, but no one else would see. What's the fun in that? Actually I wouldn't, it's the hypocritical "Jesus Freak" in me that prevents it.

Disgusting. I hope it backfires on all of you. If I have anything to say about, it will. I'm no champion of Political Correctness, but that was flat out over the line.

For the record I sent a comment about this article regarding your classification of the late Tom Landry as a hypocritical "Jesus Freak" to the CST Editors and will be sending a comment to Mike Ditka as well.

In the comment to the CST I said your article was full of errors. It was.

For the record, the nickname "America's Team" was bestowed on the Cowboys in 1979 by Bob Ryan of NFL Films. It is not a self appointed nickname. Every year some team tries to make it theirs. It never works.

First of all if it is so offensive why do so many teams and their fans want it? It's a freaking nickname. Get over it already.

You mentioned Duane Thomas and Lance Rentzel as part of America's Team. No they weren't. Look at the date above again. 1979.

Lance Rentzel's last year with the team was 1974.
Duane Thomas' last year was 1971.

The nickname has nothing to do Pete Gent's book either. He was gone from the team in 1968, and he published his book in 1973.

Time should play a factor in your reporting Mr. Telander. The purpose of the nickname should too. The reason for Mr. Ryan's dub was the attraction of the team nationally. In other words, everywhere he went there were fans.

Did you see how many Cowboys fans were at the game in MIAMI last week? Ever seen how many show up when the team goes to Arizona? They are an attraction. hence the nickname.

How many National TV games do they have this year Mr. Telander? Do you need me to do that research for you too? Here you go. No charge.

4. Nov. 19 -- CBS Sunday National (mostly Colts-Cowboys), 23.4 million

Look closely. They are FOX's highest rated game. CBS's highest rated. NBC's highest rated. Which networks are missing? ESPN and NFLN. Son of a gun here's ESPN's top rated game.

1. ESPN Monday Night Football (Giants-Cowboys), 10/23 -- 16.0 million

So the only network where they were not the highest rated game they televised was the NFLN game against Atlanta. Interesting.

Also, according to NBC, our game against Seattle was the most-watched wild-card game in NFL history, with 26.7 million viewers.

In other words, in a medium where ratings drive the story the Cowboys drive the ratings. That sir, is why they earned the nickname America's Team and why no one can take it away from them even though they try.

The only question that remains is, can you admit you had no clue?
