. . . a conditional 2nd round pick and cap space?

What an odd offseason for the Suns, so far.

The Phoenix Suns traded center Kurt Thomas to the Seattle SuperSonics Friday morning in an effort to alleviate the pressure on the salary cap.

In the trade, the Sonics receive Thomas and the Suns' first-round draft picks in 2008 and 2010. In return, the Suns receive a 2009 conditional 2nd-round pick and a trade exception, worth roughly $8 million.
"We are doing everything we can to keep our core group together. Sometimes in doing so, you have difficult decisions to make," said Suns President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Steve Kerr in a press release Friday.

"We feel good going forward having our core group of players under contract for several years, including the recent addition of free-agent Grant Hill. The bottom line is there are tough decisions to make, but we have flexibility and our core together. We really like the group of players we've assembled and feel we can make a legitimate run for an NBA championship next season."

Thomas, 34, was due to make about $8 million over the 2007-08 season.

Last season Thomas averaged 4.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 18.0 minutes in 67 games (13 starts) with the Suns, including 7.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 19.3 minutes in 11 games (five starts) in the 2007 NBA Playoffs.

The NBA is so strange when it comes to financial matters. Their salary cap is very confusing. This is a weird trade. Maybe the Suns are setting up for a big trade with the extra cap space.

For their sake I hope so. They've squandered three 1st round picks in the span on a few weeks - basically for nothing. Unless there's a big trade coming down, I don't get it. Are they THAT far over the cap?

Maybe I'm just used to being a Dallas sports fan since not only do we pay for our own players, we help pay the salaries of players on other teams. "A-Rod, here's $9 million a year - go play for the Yankees. Michael Finley, here's $18 million - go win a championship . . . for someone else. There ya go."

I don't know what that "trade exception" thing means, but it sounds like the Suns are trying to stockpile cash for resigning Marion.

nah, they were pretty high up there on the luxury tax threshold. After getting this eight million a the couple of mill they got from portland for the draft day trade was barely enough to get under the luxury tax threshold. They are just a bunch of cheap *****. Expect lots of foul trouble for amare next year trying to guard TIMMY!!!! makes me happy just thinking about that big baby walking to the bench
