'Superhuman!' Dallas Cowboys Support Rookie Mazi Smith Amid Slow Start: 'Everything We Wanted!'

Jonathan Alfano 12/23/23

The Dallas Cowboys have done a very good job of drafting in recent years, with first-round picks like CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons becoming instant stars.

On the other hand, defensive tackle Mazi Smith, the Cowboys' latest first-round pick, hasn't had as much immediate success. The former Michigan Wolverine has played mostly as a rotational player in his rookie season, recording 12 total tackles, three tackles for loss and three QB hits.

"I think there's definitely plays he can learn from as far as pad level," coach Mike McCarthy said. "But I thought he did a good job fighting, staying in his gap, fitting his gap."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave an even stronger endorsement of Smith, affirming that he is more than pleased with his play so far. "Mazi has shown us everything that we've wanted when we took him," Jones said. "He does need to continue his development. ... We're gonna need Mazi and we're gonna need him in the middle there. They're gonna come at us in the run game in the future."

Give the guy a chance, folks expect an all pro his first season and it doesn’t work that way for most.

For those who don’t bother to actually read the article Hankins is quoted
"When you get first-round guys at those positions, you would like to see them splash out and do the same things they were doing in college," Hankins said. "To me, I don't think that's realistic, especially for me first getting into the league. I wasn't at this level that I'm at now. All in all, you gotta learn the game and it'll get better. Everything else will fall into place."

He almost looks like Tyron Smith's replacement, more than the guy who is being groomed to replace Hankins. Lean and muscle.

Pay attention...that is actually an eye of wisdom and study of talent on the level of guts, and for centuries. Crapping on a actual strength of the same Jerry Jones...is foolishness. He is good at seeing a man and his guts developing. How many seasons did it take both Randy White and Bob Lilly to be dependable?

definitely, a first RD DT this bad is not we signed up for but was predictable from his college tape.
And I say that everyone's being ridiculous they don't read they don't comprehend they refuse to listen to professionals opinions which by the way picking him at 27 where the Eagles pick Jordan Davis who did nothing his rookie year either it's a slow developing process for some rookies especially at nose tackle literally 13th overall pick in the first round to the Eagles they don't feel it was a wasted pick he actually has improved a lot this year some of y'all just think it should be instant add water and you get a pro bowler or you consider them a bust yet this this like cluelessness and egotistical egomaniacal fan at their best....

I'll take the word of a bunch of professionals and which are players and coaches that do this for a living over anyone in here who thinks this was a bad pick the same with the rest of the draft it seems like they went into the draft with very little holes to fill and got guys that our future guys.... I don't believe they're gonna do that again this draft but at that particular draft seemed odd to fans but I believe they had a plan and they got the guys they were looking for they weren't expecting instant success....

The answer is Randy white was buried on special teams his first two seasons and then finally got his shot in season three and then became the manster

It's exactly what we thought we were getting. He wasn't a top 5 or even a top 10 pick. He was a late 1st rounder that we knew wasn't going to come in and start throwing guys around.

The draft is about the future. I guess some forget that. Instant gratification society we live in now.
