Would you believe that your 6-5 Dallas Cowboys have out-gained their opponents in all but one game this season? In fact Dallas is second (behind 49ers) in yardage differential per game. The Cowboys are averaging 115 more yards per game than opponents.

Giants, +24 yards
Skins, +219 yards
Dolphins, +193 yards
Saints, -9 yards
Packers, +228 yards
Jets, +17 yards
Eagles, +119 yards
Giants, +158 yards
Vikings, +79 yards
Lions, + 197 yards
Pats, +39 yards

Offense #1 ranked; #6 ranked

Conclusions:
-If anyone thinks the Cowboys are a 'bad' or 'mediocre' team...they are out of their minds.
-If this team (and refs) can clean this up...there is still a lot of potential
-Clearly the Cowboys aren't translating their productivity (offensive/defensive) into wins and losses

A combination of poor game management, a lack of turnovers, and ugly special teams have--so far at least--stolen away this team's chance for a special season.

It really comes down to mental mistakes a lot of times.
Ty Smith false starting when the team was driving and sputtering the O.
Multiple drops of easy catches.
So many flags on both sides.

A D that can only compensate for so many errors and can't give the ball back to save their lives.

Zero good field position.
Giving up bad field position.

Stats don't win games! Jeezus!!!

Not enough short drives, aka takeaways and good special teams.

Time and again the Cowboys start at their 20 or worse. Have to go 50 yards to even think about a field goal.

TO differential offsets it. The blocked punt and the kick were two turnovers yesterday. Zero takeaways. You lose 80% of the time when you do that. 100% when you’re playing the Patriots. At home. And the weather makes it so you can’t throw the ball.

Do yards generally correlate to wins?

The top four teams in yardage differential in 2019:
49ers (9-1)
Cowboys (6-5)
Patriots (9-1)
Ravens (8-2)

We are leaving lots of meat on the bone. It's insane we are 6th in defense and 1st in offense yet sit where we do.

Dallas is tied for last in starting field position.

The other three teams there rank 1st, 2nd, and 6th.

Dallas offense is tied for dead last in starting field position.

Red zone TD% ranks 16th, tied with the Saints.

The Cowboys TD% from outside the red zone ranks 3rd.

This offense is very good. But where it lacks is having an athletic tight end. And we don't have elite aerial type WR. That hurts in red zone.

The other RZ limitation is Fredericks' ongoing recovery to form, and Connor not being a good power player. Interior running when we need it...isn't always there.

Like Shannon Sharpe calls them...…"Empty calories".

They can be empty calories.

But if you pick a season and look at the top five teams in yardage differential...they are usually the top teams.

….at 6-5…..we ain't.

It’s an interesting stat but I chalk it up as they just really poured it on in a few of the garbage games. There’s nothing special about this team.

Yes, that's the point of this thread: Looking at why and how the results aren't being there, despite the positives with O and, to a lesser degree, with the D.

Don't agree at all. There is such a tendency after losses to view everything negatively.

Turnovers absolutely translated to several of our losses. Refs factored in. And poor coaching at key points sure hasn't helped. But even after the day in windy, rainy New England...this offense is still at the top of the business at moving the ball down the field.

But I think the differential thing just wanders in the realm out outlier territory. Looking at just the Green Bay game, it’s absurd to have that kind of differential in a game you were thumped in, and we all know what caused it.

In a single game looking at stats can be misleading. But when you look at full seasons (or 10-12 games deep into a season) teams that have the biggest yardage differentials are almost always the top teams.

Yet we've managed to fumble that advantage.

yes I believe it, they are 1st in Offense and 6th in defense (which is pretty much saying the same). I had another thread examining the team history of such a rarity but it didnt gain traction like your thread is. Only 2 times in 41 years that has happened, the other time they won a SB, this time barely over 500

Dont have the personell in the PASSING game to score in the redzone. Witten was SUPPOSED to help with that...but he is WASHED. Cooper is not physical enough. We should give some other WRs a chance when we are 10 yards outside the WR!
