Looks like Superman is getting rave reviews so far so that's pretty cool. Who would have thought a Superman who looks, acts and has the hope of the comics would do well.
Thanks for the effort you put into this, but did it address the question of that James Gunn adding spinoffs and new introduction DC characters into the DCU ?It is completely true DC/Warner Bros have released limited material for the previous DCEU but that is explainable. They invested in Zack Snyder, who delivered superhero projects but there was not any cohesive, interconnecting blueprint between them. Everything was loosely thrown together stuff.
On the other hand, Kevin Ferge constructed an outline of the first three phases of the MCU before he produced Iron Man in 2008. Despite any criticism, all characters and their films (and television series) were pre-schemed to be interconnected with one another.
Primarily, the DCEU was conceived upon recapturing box office success of decades of 'safe' previous Superman and Batman movies. It was an intentionally shortsighted endeavor, dependent on cashing in on prior results from the late 1970's forward.
The MCU was made akin to constructing a building. Plans were drawn out. A solid foundation (Iron Man) was laid. The phases are floors with each set of movies and television series representing rooms, with rooms reflecting comic book characters. It is an all-inclusive, calculated, self-perpetuating project.
In short, the MCU was created on the premise it would introduce newer and newer characters. The DCEU never seriously did the same beyond what Snyder thought would work with audiences.
I will give Snyder his props though concerning Steppenwolf. Like you, I disliked how the CGI villain was used in 2017's Justice League. That was some weak, dumb <expletive> Joss Whedon re-edited after Warner Bros ran off Snyder.
Luckily, the studio came to its senses and allowed Snyder to re-RE-edit Whedon's crap with what he had first envisioned. In my opinion, 2021's Justice League was Snyder's best work in the DCEU, which revolved around a truly, CGI-menacing Apokolips villain that took full advantage of Ciaran Hinds' voicework.
All hope (at least for old comic book fans like myself) for the new DCU now rests with James Gunn. Regardless of his future success or failure, Gunn has a track record of innovative, fresh perspective for the genre with his Guardians of the Galaxy films. Even his first foray into DC with the animated Creature Commandos series on HBO reinforces his adaptation insight.
Now, we wait-and-see if Gunn has actually transferred his MCU magic to the DCU. One thing is already known. Gunn has dived into this new creative pool with a directive that he will not be limited to solely producing Superman and Batman material for consumers. It will be much more like the MCU from day one.
So... less than 48 hours and counting to find out...
Well, James Gunn has a plan that has not been completely revealed yet. What is known are the authorized projects and projected films and/or television series slated for this new DCU (link):Thanks for the effort you put into this, but did it address the question of that James Gunn adding spinoffs and new introduction DC characters into the DCU ?
- Is there a Black Widow from the Avengers series ? ....
- Black Panther from the Avengers
- The Falcon (new Capt Amre) from the Capt America series
- Wolverine from the Xmen series
- Venom from the Spidey series
- Elektra from Daredevil movie
Are there any DC spinoffs ... ?
- WonderWoman was an original film before the Snyder Justice League films
- Ditto for Aquaman, before he finally appeared in JL.
- Green Lantern, like WW and Aqua, is also an official Justice League member in the comics but his original movie also was before the Snyder's JL films..
- Catwoman (Halle Berry) ...Ugh
- Joker - Opinions vary with original (Joaquinn Phoenix) although sequel (Joker: Folie à Deux- with Gaga) received such horrible reviews and viewer feedback.
- I mention spinoffs because along with first original films (ala Black Adam) that's a way of DCU expanding and evolving beyond just the norm Superman/Batman.
Frankly can we consider Blue Bettle one of those DC original creation films ?
- Imo, Gunn is making a mistake with the Black Adam discontinuation, i think it would be a grat idea to re-boot a new Green Lantern film, instead of that ridiculous
Ryan Reynolds version
- Martian Manhunter would be another great idea, given his powers and origin background the loss of his world & family. ( i really need to see directors cut of JL,
cuz i just Don't remeber Martian Manhunter in that film) at all
- and @DallasEast .. you just know i have to mention my boy Etrigan the Demon as a future film interest

Industry veterans James Gunn and Peter Safran have been appointed to the new roles of Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of DC Studios, overseeing the overall creative direction of the DC Universe across film, TV, and animation under a single banner. Gunn and Safran will report to David Zaslav, President and Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Discovery, and will work closely with Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, Co-Chairpersons and CEOs of Warner Bros. Film Group. The appointments will be effective on November 1. In their new roles, Gunn and Safran will spearhead the development and execution of a long-term plan for the many properties licensed from DC Comics, focused on continuing the tradition of high-quality storytelling for the DC Universe...
Gunn's new responsibilities are favorable to what Keige Feige has overseen and is doing at Marvel. Will he introduce new characters how we want? I doubt it but that is obviously his plan--whether those characters will be featured as solo projects or supporting characters. I include the latter using Superman as an example, since we have clearly seen Guy Gardner (Green Lantern), Mr. Terrific, etc., in the released trailers.
As far as Etrigan is concerned, I do think Gunn has demonstrated enough quirky-ness in his movies he has written and/or directed in the past to introduce a character like that. Will he? I do still do not think so, but that is just a feeling on my part that is not based on anything concrete.
