Surprise 1st round pick. Using CBSSports prospect rankings. Includes a trade.

27- Kevin White, WR, West Virginia - (6'3 210lbs) - I know, I know. A WR? Seriously? I'll call it now; teams are going to scramble like they do every year - drafting quarterbacks, pass rushers, and tackles 10-15 spots ahead of where they're ranked because they have to fill a need. Kevin White becomes a casualty of this, falling into the Cowboys lap and the BPA on the Cowboys board by a mile. This guy reminds me of Miles Austin at his best. How nice would it be to have a legitimate threat opposite Dez? White is a #1 WR in half of the NFL, and he's our #2. This is also a big insurance policy if somehow (god forbid) Dez gets away or gets injured. We can't expect Dez to never get hurt, and White can step right in and be a TRUE #1 WR if this were to ever happen. This also gives the Cowboys the option to line Dez up in the slot with Williams and White on the outside. With Jason Witten becoming more of a blocking TE, I truly believe White could come in and be the #2-#3 read on offense from game 1.

60- Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest - (6'0 175lbs) - Love this guy. Fantastic cover corner. Didn't put up gaudy numbers, but teams stopped throwing in his direction. Could start immediately opposite Scandrick, keeping Claiborne off the field.

***Cowboys trade this years 4th (124) and next years 2nd to move up into the 3rd round***
3rd round- Chris Hackett, FS, TCU - (6'2 195lbs) - True FS. Would take Wilcox's spot at FS and be a day one starter, JJ Wilcox and Barry Church battle it out for the starting SS spot. It's a steep price to pay, but the Cowboys have Hackett rated as a 2nd round player and he falls to the 3rd. They pull the trigger and get it done for what they feel is the answer at FS for the next decade.

91- Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB/DE, Louisville - (6'4 256lbs) - Could provide an immediate pass rush presence at DE. Highly doubt he will be here at this point, but he is now, so I run to the podium with his name on my card.

155- Jalston Fowler, FB, Alabama - (5'11 264lbs) - Best FB in the country. Will give a huge return on investment for a 5th round pick, springing holes open for Murray. Could prove to be a key piece in the Cowboys offense.

Let's keep it real. The Cowboys aren't going to go all defense in the draft. If there's a fantastic player sitting at their pick that is the BPA, they'll take him and make it work. That's how winning franchises build a team. They have 2 picks in the 7th to grab a developmental OL and DL.

Rip it to shreds.

I'm OK taking a WR in the 1st if he is elite. That would give them the option to franchise DEZ in 2015 and 2016 and then move on. The money he wants could be used on other players.

I don't think that Hackett starts as a rookie. Wilcox is better than people think.

Mauldin is being discussed as a 1st round possibility. I see him as a 2nd.

Yeah. I don't think Mauldin will be there. He is as of right now so I'm taking gross advantage of it. :p

27- Kevin White, WR, West Virginia - (6'3 210lbs) - If a WR in the 1st, then I would rather have Oklahoma's Dorial Green-Beckham (6'5 225 4.4). Top 10 talent.

60- Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest - (6'0 175lbs) - If a corner then I want a thumper who also makes plays on the ball like Oregon's Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (5'9 195 4.4), Miami (OH) Quinten Rollins (5'11 195 4.5) or Florida State's PJ Williams (6'0 200 4.4) - All three fit what Marinelli wants from his corners, which is hit as well as make plays on ball.

***Cowboys trade this years 4th (124) and next years 2nd to move up into the 3rd round***
3rd round- Chris Hackett, FS, TCU - (6'2 195lbs) - Like Hackett but not enought to trade up for. If trade up then prefer a more athletic player like Fresno State's Derron Smith (5'11 200 4.5) who has similar if not better ballhawk abilities. Also a MW DPOY. But not a fan of the trade up, especially for a FS.

91- Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB/DE, Louisville - (6'4 256lbs) - Waiting this late to draft a pass rusher is not wise IMO. But Mauldin would be value here. His stock should rise after combines IMO.

155- Jalston Fowler, FB, Alabama - (5'11 264lbs) - Best FB in the country. Will give a huge return on investment for a 5th round pick, springing holes open for Murray. Could prove to be a key piece in the Cowboys offense. Agreed but FB is not a position I would invest draft picks on. Every one is precious and can be used for impact positions like OL or DL. You can find starting FB in UDFA. They are also cheap FA signings, especially for proven production.

That would be a pretty massive drop for White...are you anticipating a 4.6 40 or an impending weed charge? They are the only ways I see White falling to 27.

Solid picks after the 1st round...

but my jaw would drop if we actually took a wideout in the 1st

i hope we take care of our sorely needed passrush in FA then if we come out the draft like this. We need dline help like yesterday.

People love the talent of Green-Beckham. If you told me in 2 years he was going to be a star I'd probably say sure I can see that. If you told me in two years he's going to be suspended by the league for a year I'd say I can see that. I just don't think he's a good gamble in round 1, and am not sure he fits in to the mold of players they seem to be wanting now. If they do decide to take him in the first I'll give the team the benefit of a doubt they've earned in the last few drafts, but that's a lot of red waiving around there.
