Surprise 1st round pick. Using CBSSports prospect rankings. Includes a trade.
27- Kevin White, WR, West Virginia - (6'3 210lbs) - I know, I know. A WR? Seriously? I'll call it now; teams are going to scramble like they do every year - drafting quarterbacks, pass rushers, and tackles 10-15 spots ahead of where they're ranked because they have to fill a need. Kevin White becomes a casualty of this, falling into the Cowboys lap and the BPA on the Cowboys board by a mile. This guy reminds me of Miles Austin at his best. How nice would it be to have a legitimate threat opposite Dez? White is a #1 WR in half of the NFL, and he's our #2. This is also a big insurance policy if somehow (god forbid) Dez gets away or gets injured. We can't expect Dez to never get hurt, and White can step right in and be a TRUE #1 WR if this were to ever happen. This also gives the Cowboys the option to line Dez up in the slot with Williams and White on the outside. With Jason Witten becoming more of a blocking TE, I truly believe White could come in and be the #2-#3 read on offense from game 1.
60- Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest - (6'0 175lbs) - Love this guy. Fantastic cover corner. Didn't put up gaudy numbers, but teams stopped throwing in his direction. Could start immediately opposite Scandrick, keeping Claiborne off the field.
***Cowboys trade this years 4th (124) and next years 2nd to move up into the 3rd round***
3rd round- Chris Hackett, FS, TCU - (6'2 195lbs) - True FS. Would take Wilcox's spot at FS and be a day one starter, JJ Wilcox and Barry Church battle it out for the starting SS spot. It's a steep price to pay, but the Cowboys have Hackett rated as a 2nd round player and he falls to the 3rd. They pull the trigger and get it done for what they feel is the answer at FS for the next decade.
91- Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB/DE, Louisville - (6'4 256lbs) - Could provide an immediate pass rush presence at DE. Highly doubt he will be here at this point, but he is now, so I run to the podium with his name on my card.
155- Jalston Fowler, FB, Alabama - (5'11 264lbs) - Best FB in the country. Will give a huge return on investment for a 5th round pick, springing holes open for Murray. Could prove to be a key piece in the Cowboys offense.
Let's keep it real. The Cowboys aren't going to go all defense in the draft. If there's a fantastic player sitting at their pick that is the BPA, they'll take him and make it work. That's how winning franchises build a team. They have 2 picks in the 7th to grab a developmental OL and DL.
Rip it to shreds.
