Commanders looking to deal QB Ramsey

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

In one of the NFL's worst-kept secrets, Washington Commanders coach Joe Gibbs has acknowledged that the team is trying to trade former first-round quarterback Patrick Ramsey, and has granted permission to the one-time starter and his agent to seek potential trade suitors as well.

"We're moving ahead, trying to see what opportunities are out there for him and also evaluating what is best for us," Gibbs allowed. "I'm not sure if anything will get done, but we're looking, and we're letting [agent] Jimmy Sexton look around and talk [to other teams]."

There are, however, at least two potential impediments to trading Ramsey, the Commanders' first choice in the 2002 draft, who is still regarded as a quarterback with solid potential.

The first is the anticipated glut in the quarterback market, with the possibility that high-profile veterans such as Chad Pennington (New York Jets), Drew Brees (San Diego), Daunte Culpepper (Minnesota) and Brian Griese (Tampa Bay) will be thrust into the free-agent market. A few months ago, none of those players was projected as a free agent but a number of factors, from injuries to salary cap implications, have impacted their respective circumstances.

Second, until the last few days, the Commanders were still seeking a second- or third-round pick in return for Ramsey, league sources said. And while that may have been a viable price tag three months ago, a buyer's market and Washington's ham-handed handling of Ramsey have probably reduced his value in the eyes of some teams interested in acquiring the four-year veteran.

Indications over the weekend were that the Commanders, who have targeted the New York Jets as a possible trade partner, have dropped the price. But the Jets, who have some interest in a deal, won't move ahead until they resolve the Pennington situation, and determine whether he will accept a proposed salary cut for 2006, or if they will be forced to release him.
For now, there is no deal imminent for Ramsey, demonstrating once again that timing is key.

A year or two ago, when it became obvious that Gibbs' staff wasn't enamored of Ramsey, the Commanders would almost certainly have commanded a higher price for the former Tulane star. But Washington failed to pull the trigger on a deal when Sexton could have brought them several suitors. Gibbs sold Ramsey on the notion that he would compete for the starting job, then went out and invested a 2005 first-round pick on Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell.

Ramsey started the '05 season opener, was pulled in favor of Mark Brunell at halftime, and didn't log another start the rest of the season. The poor handling of the situation probably means that Washington will have to settle for far less now in any Ramsey trade. Even at a reduced rate the Commanders likely have to deal Ramsey or release him, since he has finally become alarmed by his status.

"He's frustrated with the situation over the last couple years," Gibbs said.
Ramsey, 27, has a 10-14 record as a starter. He has completed 480 of 861 passes for 5,649 yards with 34 touchdown passes, 29 interceptions and a 75.0 quarterback rating. His base salary for 2006 is $1.688 million, not unreasonable for a team that views him as a starter, but he is entering the final season of his original contract. Any team interested in acquiring Ramsey would probably want him to sign an extension before completing a trade.

Tough kid- he deserves to go somewhere that at least gives him a shot at fair treatment.

Commanders should have pulled the trigger on a trade w/ the Jets just as fast as the Cowboys should have w/ Romo.

I always thought that if Ramsey woukd have a good QB coach, he would be a really good QB. I think he deserves a chance to play and I think he got the short end of the stick in DC. Honestly, I wouldn't mind having him here for a year as back up to Bledsoe and have him as the starter in 2007 if Henson burns out.

I've predicted it since Gibbs became HC & foolishly mistreated Ramsey--Ramsey will end up here. What we're looking at is the same situation as Vinny/Parcells with the Jets. Parcells will only expect him to not lose games--not win them. Ramsey is a good tough kid & will be a solid QB. I think he'd work well under Parcells.

With a new team....good coaching... I think he's got a chance to be a good QB.

Lots of talk here in NY about the Jets going after him...the Skins maybe packaging Ramsey with a #1 for Abraham.

I think he's a good QB who got in a bad system. Personally, after seeing the beating he took from the Boys a few years back and how he wouldn't give up, I'd love to see him with a star on his helmet. He's a great competitor and could be a franchise QB with the right system.

such a shame. I'll tell you what's worse than the #1 they used on Ramsey, the #1 and other draft pick they had to use to get Campbell, who IMO will never amount to as good a QB as Ramsey. I laughed pretty hard when they pulled that trade to get Campbell. That's right up there with us using a second on that one QB from Georgia....i refuse to say his name.
I have to say that I've actually liked Ramsey despite playing in hades.
I hope they get nothing for him and he goes somewhere and bites them in the butt. I think Ramsey is more than a capable backup and given the right system could be an okay starter.

How well can Abraham play in the 3-4? Can he also cover, or is he purely a pass rush specialist?

And how would the Skins be able to afford Abraham anyway?

The Commanders aren't going to trade Ramsey to the Cowboys! Why do some of you think he will wind up in Dallas?

I have always thought that Ramsey has the physical tools but he is just missing something. I don't know if he got messed up in the head because of the Spurrier disaster or what. I hope he succeeds wherever he goes, but I don't think that he will be a quality #1 QB in this league.

1 yr would be cool to have him around for, thats it, i would give up a late round pick, 5th or 6th for him, no more, no less, and sign him for 1 year, just to let him back-up Bledsoe and see if he can accomplish something.

Ramsey will be released soon. Don't give the Skins dog crap for him. We can get him for free.

This reminds me of the McKnight fiasco where we gave up a 3rd rounder for a lousy player the Seahawks were going to dump anyway.

That QB from Georgia has a winning record in the NFL, 18-16 vs Ramsey's 10-14 and he's helped two teams make the playoffs. Ramsey's done nothing so far and will continue to do nothing, unlike Jason Campbell, who has guided a SEC team to a 13-0 record. The Georgia QB has had the career that Ramsey wishes he had had and Campbell will have the career that Ramsey wishes he had had. The NFL is evolving and Ramsey is just a 'pocket passer',i.e.,one dimensional, without the accuracy of a 'pocket passer'. Low accuracy plus immobility and lack of height equals a failed career.

A backup QB with no NFL experience is no help at all. What's unbelievable is how people cling to fantasy about our so called backup qb's. Parcells should have had a veteran with some game experience as our true 'backup qb'. The fact that he didn't is also unbelievable.
