I just want to say, I was pleasantly surprised the Cowboys took Ezekiel Elliott as the 4th pick in this draft. Here is why I was so surprised:
- The Cowboys decided to go big on the offensive line the past few years. As a result, they have built an excellent offensive line. I believe the Cowboys saw what a third round back (Demarco Murray) could do behind that line and decided they no longer needed to spend premium resources at running back.
- Even last year, McFadden and "others" further showed what an average running back could accomplish behind a great offensive line.
- Because of this, I was convinced the Cowboys would run to the podium and select Ramsey if he became available. Even so, I was in love with the fantasy of marrying a star running back behind this offensive line. Thinking about the history that could be made, and the joy of getting to witness it.
- So, on draft day I am sitting with my Brother-in-Law and the unthinkable happens; Ramsey and Elliott are available to the Cowboys. My Brother-in-Law looks and me and says, "who will it be"? I just stared at the TV and utter the words, "Zek... it will be Zek". I said this knowing the Cowboys have shown no interest in placing a premium resource at running back. Maybe it was a premonition, maybe it was just wishful thinking, or perhaps bad sushi. It does not matter, what matters is I got to hear Michael Irvin say, "With the 4th pick in the 2016 draft the Cowboys select Ezekiel Elliott". Or something like that, I was a little dazed.
- Don't get me wrong, I would have been fine if they took Ramsey. I could make all kinds of arguments as to why it would be a perfectly sane pick for the Cowboys.
- However, the Elliott pick was magical. It was something that should not have happened based on all the known information. In spite of everything the Cowboys had shown us, they decided to go for broke and use the 4th pick in the draft to place a talented running back behind that great offensive line.
