I hope he gets better. He's the consummate lunch pail guy, working for everything he's gotten.

Wonder if Rico is ready?

Rico and Hanna are not ready
discussed promoting receiver Vince Mayle from the practice squad as an H-back, as well as Rod Smith

Escobar will take over Swaim’s snaps, and the Cowboys are discussing options for the third tight end spot. James Hanna and Rico Gathers are not ready.

Hanna underwent knee surgery in August, and the Cowboys placed him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

“We don’t anticipate James being back ready any time soon,” Garrett said.

The Cowboys are pleased with the development of Gathers, who has made huge strides since the Cowboys made him a sixth-round pick. Gathers, a former basketball player at Baylor, had not played football since the eighth grade and thus was drafted as a project with still much to learn.

This is a real shame. Swaim had really shown a lot of improvement as a blocker this year, and his loss will impact the running game.

Austin Traylor just got placed on the Patriots practice squad. He flashed some blocking skills in camp as I recall.

Swaim was drafted out of the University of Texas as a blocking tight end. Surprisingly, he was a much better receiver than expected. Unfortunately, he was too inconsistent as a blocker. Enter rookie free agent Traylor this offseason. The opposite of Swaim, Austin is a superior blocker as well as being a solid receiver.

In Bob McGinn's annual scouts notes series, when talking about Austin Traylor, one scout said: "best blocking tight end I saw all year." Traylor was essentially a sixth offensive lineman for the Badgers, who during his senior year became a viable receiving option.

With Hanna being the best blocker of the bunch, an immediate need opened up that hasn’t been able to be filled by either Swaim or Gathers. Swaim has been a “get in the way” type of blocker; someone who gets in front of his man but doesn’t have the ability to steer him. That’s a necessity in the Dallas scheme. Gathers is still trying to learn the difference between a down block and an elbow screen.

Traylor - At 6-foot-3 and 247 pounds, he gives weight to both Swaim and Hanna but can leverage his height to get under the pads of linebackers and defensive linemen to move them out of position.

More like he delayed getting pushed backwards over the cliff just long enough for Zeke to "Indiana Jones" his way through there.

LOL

That's the same thing I saw. If Zeke wasn't so fast, there's no way he makes it through a hole that was closing rapidly.

It was mentioned earlier, but Austin Traylor would be decent as a replacement. Not much out there to choose from.

That sucks. Big fan of Swaim but I like Escobar. I know he's not the best blocker but he's a legit weapon in the passing game
