The problem was the pause after he caught the ball..he stood there and didn't move...

Lets not forget he has catch interference protection. Yea they can hammer him but only after he has caught the ball. They would have to time it very well to hit him full speed and not get flagged. It was a smart play on his part but unfortunately his 1 second "pause and cringe" they ruled as "giving himself up" whatever that means.

So? When Leveon Bell pauses in the hole, is it patience, or is he giving himself up?

All I know is I've watched football for way too many years to admit it here, and I've never seen that called before.

What the heck does "He gave himself up" mean. I have never heard of such a concept.
Yeah...wouldn't taking a knee or sliding down be giving yourself up. On top of that there was fair catch interference

That was awesome. Instantly gained my respect. The sheer ballsiness of it in his first NFL game. And he legitimately fooled everyone, including the refs.

Obviously should have been allowed.

What's worse is the forced fumble that Jaylon caused that didn't get called for whatever reason.

It normally is when a player, often a QB or RB quit trying to resist a tackle. The defense is required to let up and not take the player to the ground at that point.

The big difference is that the offensive player is normally already in the hands of the defensive players, not untouched like Switzer.

Because referees suck.

1 Switzer did not give himself up.

2. Elis 4th sack was blatantly obvious

3. The Sean Lee fumble was also a srew job.

One could argue the Dez PI was crap but Jenkins was very physical the entire game. There were several that could have gone against him.

1 He didn't, but the whistle blew before he took off, so the refs messed that up too, so they made up a call.
2 The review should have came from upstairs. The fact that it wasn't screwed us again.
3 The Jaylon Smith fumble was probably on Garrett. He could have thrown the flag and the refs could have told him that they already blew the whistle. Worst case, they tell him he can't challenge, no harm done. Best case, they review and clearly see the ball is out AND Sean Lee clearly has possession and is down by contact. Screwed again
4 I would have to add Malik Collins roughing the passer. Head down the whole time, grabbed Eli from the back and took him down. Couldn't see the release, but he didn't "throw" Eli down, he just follows through with a tackle. Screwed

He did deke them, but doing that regularly in the NFL will get him flattened...better to have saved that for a clutch moment to see if it would work.
It will actually make teams think more. Cause if they guess wrong and flattened him its a 15 yard penalty

Can someone explain why the yards weren't allowed on the Switzer return where he never called the fair catch, but after catching the punt he sauntered as if he had called a fair catch but then went for 7 yards? Since he absolutely did not signal a fair catch, how can those yards be taken away?

I know there's a rule against calling a fair catch and then returning the punt, but this wasn't the case, and if it was that is a penalty which was not called. Seems like another case of making it up as they go.

I thought the refs blew the whistle, not sure though...

Wait a min....I thought the Refs said "The Player DID NOT give himself up" and they gave Switzer the return yardage.

They like to make rules up on the spot sometimes. Like that Eagles game where the Cowboy player hit the Eagles punt returner too hard.

He's a rookie who barely played in preseason. Time will tell.

Refs said he "gave himself up" on the play. He did the same thing in college and the yards were allowed, so I'm not really sure
They used a baseball rule in football. To the best of my knowledge there's no such thing as giving yourself up in football. That's why they preach play until the whistle blows. I wonder if he made a bigger play how much this would be challenged. He fooled the Refs too and they were trying save face with BS.
That said; hope he doesn't do it again, this is the NFL, some one will light him
Up!
