There are lots of different theories on why teams succeed and fail in the NFL. One of the thing that inferior coaches tend to do is come up with a "system" which was usually successful in part based on the talent they had at the time. Then they continue to look for players that are like the players they had before and hope to duplicate that success.

That seems to be the case with Marinelli. He is looking for another Warren Sapp to man the 3 Tech slot and is ignoring the 1 Tech pretty much as if it doesn't matter. Parcells placed an almost absurd value on the NT in his defense because that was what had worked for him before which is almost opposite of Marinelli.

The problem is that if another Warren Sapp were to come along, how often are you going to have a legitimate chance to draft him.

The Patriots have been almost the opposite. They tend to not really worry about a system and get good players who can play, figure out what they do well, and then let them do it. Hell they may run 40 times this week and none next week. And the RB they use this week may not get a snap next week.

Good coaches make the most of available talent instead of forcing a square peg into a round hole.
