Role Call: Rookie WR Has Small-Forward Approach

(Editor's Note: With the offseason program in the rearview mirror, it's time to look ahead. As part of the preparation for training camp, this series will introduce 25 key players who are new to the Cowboys' roster, rookies and veterans alike. The series concludes today with wide receiver T.J. Vasher.)

well has to be good reason he slipped in the draft he obviously has skills but....

What Vasher needs to be is physical, because he isn’t very fluid when running IMO. So he needs to be more physical than the guys he goes up against.

The kid is 6’6, so I would hope he can be.

could be a good redzone threat, but I think he may end up on the PS his first year. just being a redzone threat is not enough to make it on the 45 man game day roster. he has to learn to play special teams and run better routes.

I’m a big Texas Tech fan and I’ve seen TJ Vasher play in person and on TV at least 10 games. I like TJ as a college receiver but I don’t see him making this team.

Here are his strengths and weaknesses:
STRENGTHS
  • Size- he’s 6’6” (although he’s pretty thin)
  • Catch radius- can go get the ball in high places and low ones too.
  • Makes difficult catches in traffic.
  • Great red zone target.
WEAKNESSES
  • Not very fast. Has long strides but no burst.
  • Has bad tendency to drop easy passes.
  • Does not block well.
  • Takes plays off too often.
  • Has no particular special teams talent. (Did not return punts or KOs at Tech and too thin for kick coverage teams)
That last weakness- no ST skill could prove very costly to his chances to make the team. He’s a definite red zone weapon because he can battle for the ball very well. But that skill is probably not enough. I like this kid but he’s a long, long shot.

This made me go back and look at some of the other Role Call stories ... and I found this interesting:

What's Next: Some healthy training camp competition. Hunter Niswander took over for Jones in eight of the final nine games last season and averaged 47.2 yards, tying for ninth-best in the league. The 26-year-old Niswander showed promise in his NFL debut, and he'll likely handle some kickoffs and place kicks in preseason to relieve kicker Greg Zuerlein, according to special teams coordinator John Fassel. But Anger obviously has a significant edge in punting experience as training camp approaches.

I figured the main reason we brought in Anger is because he's a good punter who also is very good at kicking off. If Niswander can kick off effectively and even be the backup place-kicker, then he might stand a chance of winning the job after all.

When I looked at all the highlights of the UDFA guys, he was the one that stood out to me. Him and that new FB we got. I would love to see both those guys make the squad and get some PT.

You make a lot of sense right here. You can tell they signed a lot of these UDFA guys probably knowing that one of their top 3 isnt going to be here next year. They need to develop that 3rd WR.

Yet another for the circus.

He's a CFL talent. Do not embarrass yourself here.

I wonder why he decided not to stay in school, given that he was undrafted. I don't know if staying another year would have improved his chances but I'd imagine it wouldn't have hurt.
