You have a moribund franchise, in a depressed community, possibly on the verge of fleeing the country for Canada. Their biggest successes over the past couple of decades have been punctuated by record-setting failure. And their most famous player is even more famous for getting away with murder.

I know a few Bills fans, and they had pretty much had it with this team and were ready to give them up. While adding TO, doesn't mean a face-lift for the franchise by any means, he DOES add some interest for this season, and will keep people watching their games.

The Cowboys are trying to win a Super Bowl. Trying to make the Cowboys relevant hasn't been a concern since Bill Parcells was hired.

But in the case of the Bills, they're a relatively poor team (financially), are rarely in a position to sign a big name player (who wants to live in Buffalo? cold weather, no proximity to Las Vegas or the coast, etc), and are about as irrelevant as a team can get outside of their own city limits.

However, when they sign TO, all of a sudden they've got a national spotlight on them. It is genius. They can't be serious contenders any time soon, so why not try to raise awareness of your team? They'll be on a lot more TV sets because of it starting 2 weeks from now.

I don't know if TO will help Buffalo on the field or not, but I know that the Cowboys have a better aura around them without him. It just feels like they're more of a team and it's all about business now. We'll see.

I wouldn't say it's genius...more desperation. The fans know the team is going to be awful this year...and there really isn't much hope that they are going to be better any time soon. Signing T.O. was a last-ditch effort to sell tickets and get fans in the stands.

Maybe it was a smart move, but it was also one that HAD to be made, so I don't really see the genius in it.

Correct. signing him may be a marketing gold mine (or not), but it isn't genius. You already have precedents in Philty and Dallas so it's easy to see you're going to get a great deal more publicity and attention. It doesn't take a genius.
