hey guys i'm taking a summer course called Public Speaking and i decided my last speech for the class is going to be about "the impact Terrell Owens has had on society." I'm just curious, what do you guys think? Has he had an impact on our society, why or why not? And are there any articles that i could maybe use for research?? Thanks guys i appreciate it

Outside of the sports world, I really don't think he's had any noticeable impact on society at large.

Unlike music, I don't think the antics T.O. has been guilty of these past few years are really things kids, or anybody, see and have any desire to emulate. Sure, people look up to TO (although I don't know any), but him calling out teammates or asking for a higher salary really isn't going to raise the crime rate or accelerate spousal abuse.

(as a quick aside, I think it's funny that my 1,000th post was this)

Well, for starters, Google up T.O. and categorize the articles into either for or against. Then use the content of the articles to determine his impact on the sports fans. You don't have to worry about society as a whole, just stick with the sports society. Compare T.O. in football, to other players in other sports. You could compare him to Pete Rose in baseball, or Barry Bonds, or go back in history and use another example of a football player or baseball player. Compare T.O. to Michael Jordan, or Larry Bird. They all had an impact on sports fans

Or better yet, compare T.O. to Ty Cobb. Cobb was one of the surliest and least-likeable players in sports history, yet the time period in which he played was so different that the media and public response to some of his tactics were markedly different (don't forget that he is still on everybody's top 10 list as one of the best baseball players of all-time - much like TO, the skill didn't come without a caveat). That could be a nice little aside. Little compare/contrast of the social response to problematic sports figures in the 1910's and in the 2000's.

on society?.... I think it would be hard to find something that he was the first to do.. or did to cause a change or impact on how people think or act.

The sports media has always had an eye on the top athletes, especially those who enjoy the attention and speak openly.

If we were talking Barry Bonds.. there my be more areas of debate.. but I don't see how TO has affected "society"

I think T.O. is just a regular player that's labeled a trouble maker but you have to think to yourself. He's not going to jail, he's not getting caught up with women at hotel parties, and he's not getting caught with illegal substances.

Terrell Owens is just a confident football player that wants the ball.

I would love for the Cowboys to get Steve Smith next.

I think you have the makings of becoming a Dallas beat writer.

Seriously, I don't think you will find enough quantifiable evidence to construct an "A" worthy speech.

IMO, I think TO is the product of his upbringing (society) and the ramification that TO will have on society, if he has any at all, can’t be ascertained until some point in the future (i.e. several kids growing up giving credit to TO for what he or she has become).

Actually, I agree with your point of view adbutcher.

As an Eagles fan, I don't like TO, regardless of what he says in his newly released publication. No doubt, the book will attempt to clean up a lot of the controversial events that occurred during his tenure as a Philadelphia Eagle, throughout 2005.

However, as a member of society, I can certainly understand how Terrell wanted to escape his tortured home life, Terrell became immersed in sports. Basketball, baseball and swimming were his favorites. He also loved football, idolizing San Francisco star Jerry Rice -- sports made him happy.

Terrell does not have a criminal record (none that I've heard about), he is not on drugs, nor has he ever been accused of any of those things that menace society. I could easily see how kids will portrary TO as a role model.

Caveat: I wonder if he pledged with a fraternity in college:rolleyes:

I get your point, but let's not make TO out to be a martyr or something. TO wasn't abused as a child, he was just brought up in a strict Christian upbringing by his grandmother w/o his father being around. And he was teased by other children.

I've seen lots worse harsh home life scenarios. TO's could be worse.

I agree WG ...he is certainly no matryr!

However, reading his biography, I learned that his mother had to make some lifestyle changes due to his Grandparents being mean to TO and His family. Psychological issues that go "unchecked" can be just as abusive as physical abuse. I'm not trying to psychoanalyze TO, but it sounds like sports became his therapy. Born in Alabama, and raised in Tennessee ...I'd say he pulled up his bootstraps and has gone a mighty long way ...

Just a thought, and I might be wrong ...I've been wrong before.
