I am between the old Blackberry Playbook (loved the design, fully expect you guys to shoot this down). The Amazon Kindle Fire original due to the new pricedrop $159, the new Amazon HD $199, a Google Nexus or a iPad mini if announced and lower than $250 enters the discussion.

What would everyone suggest? Please don't make it a Apple v. other thread, really trying to seek some good knowledge here. Purpose for the tablet is so when traveling I can use it as opposed to bringing my laptop everywhere. While not a huge inconceivable at the current pricepoint I think a tablet is worth it. Can land a good one below $200. Also I would love if you can plug in a keyboard, one of those rubber roleup ones.

I've really enjoyed my Google Nexus so far. It's silky smooth on games and surfing the net.

I can only comment on the Google Nexus 7. I love it. I use it every day. I watch baseball using MLB.TV. I read both books and magazines. Netflix, movies, games to burn time, and of course I'm surfing CBZ with it right now.

It supports Bluetooth so it can support both keyboards and even mice I believe.

No way an iPad mini comes in below $299 IMO.

I have four tablets (Xoom, iPad, iPad 2, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Nexus 7) and the Nexus 7 is the best by far. Great form factor, fast, beautiful screen.

Of the tablets you mentioned which have also been announced, I would choose the Nexus 7. If the iPad mini fits in your price range, then I would probably go that route. (I say probably because there are too many unknown variables but I like Apple's ecosystem more).

Nexus 7 because Samsung's TouchWiz interface is bollocks.

...if these tablets can support MS Office Pro.

I use this software exclusively and I also have been thinking about getting a tablet to make my plane trips lighter.

I do a ton of spreadsheeting. Play no games. Only surf Cowboyszone when I am at home or offices I travel to.

Stay with laptop or go with tablet?

I think to compete with the Nexus 7/Amazon Fire line they need to come in at $250, maybe the Apple branding is worth another $50 to people. It is not to me.

You can't go wrong w/ the new Google Nexus 7. That is the bombiddy 7" tabby out right now.

Price and performance cannot be beat.

I personally use an ASUS t700 HD tabby w/ dockable keyboard.

I love it but its also about 650$ for both tabby and dock.

GREAT tablet though.

Good luck!

Alright I am convinced between the posting and google research. I'll go with the Nexus but first I will wait to see if Apple announces the mini next week and the price point.

You can buy a Nexus 7 at local retail stores. If you don't like it, you can return it. So if you do end up going with the Nexus 7, buying it locally will give you that option. Not sure if you can return it if purchased on Google Play. Though you might be able to, but I don't think you will want too.

That means sales tax. Which in NY is about another $20.

In NY they require you pay sales tax even on Internet orders I believe. I know Amazon and even Dell charge tax in NY.

Only Amazon orders. I'm pretty sure. Most sites don't tax. I think the law except for Amazon is if the server is in NY or they ship from NY they must charge tax.

Amazon's east coast servers are in Virginia, not NY.

They have servers in:
  • Virginia (handles all East Coast and central North American traffic)
  • Oregon (West Coast traffic)
  • California (also West Coast traffic)
  • Ireland (Europe traffic)
  • Japan (NE Asian Pacific traffic)
  • Singapore (SW Asian Pacific traffic)
  • Sao Paulo (South America traffic)
