He was the ninth rated player overall on nfl.com. The thing that I'm not sure about is his consistency on every play but that's what they keep saying about Irving too.

Sources Tell Us
"Really, really talented player. You won't always see it on every play so that is going to be a coach's job to get that out of him. Rushers with his size and athleticism are hard to find and they usually go very early in the draft." -- AFC executive

Bottom Line
"Inconsistent" has been the buzzword that has followed Charlton since coming to Michigan, but he began the process of shaking it during his senior season. Charlton is an ascending prospect with the size, length, athleticism and pass-rushing potential that NFL general managers dream of. What you see today might not be what you get. While his production coming out of college will be modest, he could become a substantially better player as a pro if he's committed to the weight room and willing to absorb coaching. High-impact defensive end with all-pro potential is his ceiling. His floor is solid starter.

With Taco's size, he will just get chiseled in off season workouts. Marinelli will get his tongue hanging out and implant a hunger to be at the ball. Oh, he is a nice piece added...

OK people who keep saying this guy is 'slow'. There's fast in shorts running in a straight line and then there's FOOTBALL FAST. Watch him turn the corner on that sack at 1:29 and tell me how 'slow' this guy is.

Another thing I like about this kid: his patience in defending the run. He keeps his head up and finds the ball as he fights through the blocks. He doesn't over commit early, he'll stand his ground until he sees where the ball is going. 1 thing I hate about some the DE's we have in the run game is their fight upfield too soon and end up chasing the ball carrier from behind.

it won't matter. if someone doesn't like him they'll pull all negative press and ignore anything to the contrary.

His run defense was one of the first things that jumped out to me. He seems to be good at diagnosing the run and moving laterally to get to the ball carrier.

I have to admit, I wasn't at first thrilled about this choice for the first round. But after watching more highlights and seeing what he can do, other than rush the QB, I think I am coming around. Time will tell, I suppose.

He might take a while to reach his considerable upside but he's a relentless competitor who's reputed to be very quick off the line. His run support is likely to be exceptional from the outset of his career, though. I don't think we could have done any better at that point of the draft. He was also the highest rated pass rushing DE left to be had at that juncture.
Word for word this is it! Add in the fact that we lost no draft capitol in order to get him.

I have a similar mindset.

Nawrocki says he's a guy that may always be challenged to avoid complacency and to sustain a level of excellence and is likely to be motivated by contact years.

Go Cowboys?
I can't judge his heart, but I'm more concerned that his athletic ability. My biggest concern is not really about taco but who was there at positions of need
I think any rankings of players would have a few db's rated higher. I don't like reaching for need and I feel we did

With his size, he's played with the bigger boys, at Michigan. He also has strongy stated in a phone interview, that he is fully committed to working hard. A good kid with a good attitude for Marinelli to develop.

I never try to judge a mans heart. If he is committed he may be a good player. I just think we passed on db's that we had rated higher
We being the cowboys own board

PFF's take:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-3-draft-needs-for-the-dallas-cowboys/

Need: Defensive end
The production from the Cowboys’ edge defenders over the past few years has been one of the team’s biggest weaknesses. Since Demarcus Ware left a few seasons ago, they have not been able to replication his production, nor find a solid defensive end for the other side of the defense. DeMarcus Lawrence has dealt with suspension and injuries and underwent offseason back surgery, while the only certainty around former second-round pick Randy Gregory is that he will be unavailable for the entire 2017 season due to another suspension.

Early-round target: Taco Charlton, Edge, Michigan

Although Charlton didn’t become a starter until his final season, he has been an extremely productive player over the past two seasons when on the field. Over the past two seasons, he has played about one full season’s worth of snaps, and amassed 91 total pressures, including 14 sacks. In just 2016, he had the third-highest pass-rush productivity among draft-eligible defenders with at least 100 pass-rush snaps. He doesn’t have elite athleticism, but isn’t far off, and would be a solid defensive end as both a pass-rusher and run defender.

Interesting he had the highest rush grade of all the prospects while admiditly playing through a high ankle sprain.

The Cowboys go by their own values and board...
I know but do you think we took the guy we had the highest grade on at that spot
Obviously there could have been players we didn't need with higher grades but say lb, and cb
Do you believe taco was higher on their board than say at cb
That's my issue because I don't think we followed our own board
Not a knock on taco just think we put position above the board

When you win and are successful, you move down in the draft and away from the premier talent. However, every draft on this site there are the lamentations from people bemoaning the picks the team makes.

Unless they played a game last night that i don't know about, we have no idea what this kid will or won't do. If you wanted a sure bet, the NFL draft is not for you. or, it seems, your metier.

I don't know why I keep having flash backs of Greg Ellis with this pick. If we can get Greg's productivity and consistency out of Taco I'll be ecstatic.

Hopefully Greg Ellis pre injury

There is reason why a team puts a value upon players. Type of play in scheme and adaptability/talent are part of a team's grade. The team probably did have a high grade upon him...

He was a pre draft visitor with the Cowboys.

Hate to admit, but Taco got my guy Ramczyk with the spin here.

10:30 AM - 12 Mar 2017

As a pass rusher, Charlton displays an adept spin move, adequate quickness, and solid bend. He lacks the second gear to really take advantage once he gets to an offensive tackle’s edge. He’s going to need to get more comfortable playing through an opponent’s pads and winning with hand-fighting techniques as a pass rusher.

While he won’t ever lead the league in sacks, Charlton will be a dominant run defender. Charlton has an acute awareness of leverage and despite his long frame, he plays with good pad level. Couple that with his powerful hips and hands, and Charlton might turn out to be the best run defender in this class.

Charlton may be a good candidate for the Cowboys if they decide to trade back and all their primary options are gone. He doesn’t fix the Cowboys pass rush, but he will improve the talent of the unit as a whole.
