I'm really starting to like Elton Brown the guard from Virginia as the choice for Dallas in the 2nd round. I know he's rated as a 1st rounder on a number of boards but guards usually dont go high in the draft and a couple of OTs are becoming fast risers (Adam Terry and Jammal Brown) and David Baas can play center as well as guard so that may push Elton Brown into the 2nd.
You also have to consider that Gurode looks like he is not able to fill the position of an effective starter and Larry Allen willl only be able to play for another season or 2 if we are lucky. Combine that with the information that we are hearing that we might get Mckenzie to play RT for us but no word of us bringing in a guard and so guard is of big concern for us.
Brown can also play some tackle, a plus when Parcells is big on guys that can do more than one thing.
I know free agency will change things alot but it looks like we will address corner, nose tackle, right tackle and safety with that. If we address DE and passrushing LB in the 1st round doesnt Brown sound real attractive if things occur that way?

Here is one of the evaluations of Brown:

Elton Brown
Guard
Virginia

Height: 6'5"
Weight: 335 lbs.
40: 5.21 - Estimated

Elton Brown is a massive guard prospect from the University of Virginia, standing 6’6 and weighing in at 330 pounds. He has a lot of experience at the position, having been a starter at guard for the past four seasons. Elton has good leadership ability and was elected team captain by his teammates. One of his biggest strengths is his athleticism—he moves around extremely well for such a large man. He is the most dominating run blocker in the draft and didn’t give up a single sack as a senior. He is very versatile and could play tackle as well as guard at the professional level. His biggest problem is he doesn’t always give 100%. He could develop into a great player if he has a coach that will push him. He will start early and be an impact player as a rookie. Guards typically don’t go very high in the draft. Sometimes you will be able to pickup the top guard prospect early in the second round. That will not be the case this year. Elton is too good of a player to fall to the second round. He will be a first round pick in April.

I would be very surprised if Dallas takes a guard in the second. I think Bill will try to find some OL ni the later rounds. But I also think that he still has some hope for some of the young kids already here - like Tucker, Peterman, and even Noll. And I wouldn't forget DiNapoli either. He's been kept for some reason...

I'm participating in a mock draft over at MaddenPlanet.com. I was gonna take Brown with the second round pick, but some a-hole took him two picks before me.

I agree with you there. We need to focus on developing the young lineman. We've selected a ton of lineman in the draft the last few years. Just gotta get them on the field and get 'em productive. We can bring in a vet or two to shore up the right side.

I disagree. If there's a lineman as good as Elton Brown available in the second round then we need to take him. Peterman sucks and shouldn't of been a first day pick anyway.

Just think... if we had only taken LeCharles Bentley instead of Andre Gurode we'd be set at RG for years to come. Or center, whichever. Bentley can play both.

The question is how do you know Peterman sucks. You just said in another post that you can't call a player a bust because of injury. He didn't get a chance to play this year. So we have no clue what we have in him.

I agree Bentley would've been a better pick up over Gurode. But since we didn't, we've got to get him over the hump. Since we tossed the OL coach, maybe that'll help him rebound this year.

I think we should go D early on in the draft. First and second rounds.

This has just got me thinking once again that when you are drafting the same positions over and over again, it's because you aren't drafting well.

It's the reason I don't think you'll see a DB selected in the first. The Cowboys have done that.

Last I checked you needed at least 2 CBs and 2 OGs in the game at the same time. Even if you throw out the RG position, does anyone think Larry Allen will be here for the next 5 years? If you really like a player at a position on OL, you'd be wise to pick him. Maybe a player like Brown starts this year, or maybe he plays part time and replaces Allen next year. If he turns out to be a good lineman, you have made a wise draft pick.

Will a new o-line coach get more out of what we have? There's already so much invested as far as the draft for o-line for this team with not enough return. Who is the new o-line coach anyway?

I wonder if Brown could play RT. I saw him pull on one play and he looked like a pretty quick athlete for a G.

Peterman sucked before the injury. Don't even know why you brought up the injury. I didn't.

I know you didn't bring it up. And you're entitled to your opinion as to him sucking. But my point is that we didn't see enough of him to tell whether he would suck or not, so it's too soon to give up on him.

I saw enough. I saw enough of him in college too. He's a solid run blocker, but can't pass block to save his life.

And we didn't "need" a Strong Safety when we draft Roy but that pick turned out ok. And we actually DO need a Guard. Gurode has already been given enough time. He can't do it. That much is evident. Peterman, if he is to develop, will end up LA's replacement. He won't be ready next season. Maybe two seasons from now, if ever.

Brown would be too good to pass up. If you need a guard, and the best guard in the draft is available to you in the second round, and that guard is well worth the pick... well, it's obvious you take the guard.

I think if Elton Brown is there in the second round when we pick we have to take him. He is too good to pass up, I think he will be gone before then. JMO

I think Brown is well worth the second round pick. He'd step in immediately and be better than Gurode.

Just don't expect him to be there.

I like David Baas better if he lasts to the second...
I like Sam Mayes in the fourth or later if he lasts...really handled UT DT Rod Wright head to head and he's a monster.
