Take a Look at the Bland Pick 6 - Cowboys Very Fortunate

I just noticed on the Bland pick-six, that it appears Clark is responsible for the back releasing and misses his assignment. This is a good thing because he is in the wrong place at the right time. His presence there, drifting to his left, causes the QB to delay the throw slightly and allows Bland to make up the distance. Looks like Clark was either playing zone in a called man coverage, or plain missed his man coming out of the backfield.

Had the QB waited a split second later, the RB would have been wide open for a large gain. Also, notice that the WR behind Bland is wide open, don't know who was supposed to cover him, and would have been a large gain. Looks like the QB telegraphed the throw from the beginning and didn't even bother to go through his reads.

Thankfully, the right DE got barely enough pressure to maybe affect the throw if the QB decided to go through his reads. A really bad decision and execution by the rookie QB.

Bland and the right DE (Armstrong?) looked to be like the only two on that play who excelled for the defense. Yes, the outcome was awesome, but the overall execution for the defense as a whole on that play looked bad. Lot to clean up there.

Thoughts?

Clark has been below average in coverage all season so it's very possible he missed his assignment on that play. Regardless it's incredible to see the ground Bland makes up for the pick.

Something else I noticed watching the TV copy of the play is the Panthers receiver Bland dove in front of- Jonathan Mingo. Look how he completely gives up even pursuing Bland even in the split second the interception occurred. Just a clear sign of a one win team having a defeatist attitude.

Clark was not out of position on the RB, he was reading the QB, he looked the WR the whole way down, so Clark didn't cover the RB but instead leaned towards the WR that the QB was staring down. Kearse was suppose to pick up the TE, who initially started to block, then he released on the inside while Kearse was on the outside. Kearse after realizing he was blocked on the rush (since he saw the TE blocking) decided to drop back into zone to cover anything coming on the backside while watching the QB never realizing that the TE had shed the DE and released to the inside.

Clark was doing his job and Kearse failed at keeping track of his cover. Had the QB not taken the first read and thew behind to the TE You are correct it would have been a big play, but my belief is that the first read was the WR running the crossing, with the TE as the second read, and with Bland in the trail position it was the correct read. It was just a bad throw that was slow, and late and allowed bland to recover and pick it off. Had it been quicker or faster to the WR he is able to catch it turn upfield and get a big gain as well.

My thoughts are, if the D played in a manner that forced a quick throw, it's not luck.
However, the defense did not force a quick throw on this play. The right DE was the only one to get close and it was not until the ball was already thrown. The QB also could have easily stepped up in the pocket and bought more time.

Ok, maybe not a quick throw, certainly by your description it caused a disruption in timing of throw, yes?

If the answer is yes, and by your own description it must be, then again, it's not luck.

And even if it was luck, so? What of it?

Clark needs to be upgraded or at least have some competition. Overshown will start next season at outside backer but we need to find someone in the draft to replace Jaylon Clark.

Because it was luck. Two players wide open with no one covering. 9 out of 10 Times that play would result in a big gain for the offense if the defense does not get lucky. Offensive coordinators will look at that play and defense and coach the QB where to look. Need to clean that defensive play up a whole lot because luck will not strike twice.

Not really. There are good coverages on a lot of plays and players do what they are supposed to do. There are plays with a busted coverages.

Two players running wide open uncovered on a play is not normal.

Being a team that constantly gets pressure and forces quick throws leads to teams trying to get the ball out quick. Most teams don't try to buy more time against our defense, they get rid of the ball. That's what pressure does. Even when it's not there, it still causes the QB's clock to be quicker. We see teams constantly using quick passes or one-read-and-out passes against us because they don't want to risk getting sacked.
