Either the draft pick or Collins would move to LG.
If Tyron gets injured then that player moves back to OT.
A later round OT will be less talented.
In free agency, good OTs will go where they have a chance to start. OTs that take a backup only job will be limited to players like Bell from last season.
I can understand the sentiment. I just think that you are defeating your team build to do this.
IMO, A first round player should be the one that gives you the biggest growth to your team. It is a team sport and all positions are important, but some easier to work with lesser talent than others......ie QB is extremely important.
A 95 QB with 55 WR's is not as good as a 90 QB with 90 WR's.
The weakest position on Dallas team is not the OL, IMO. It is on the defensive side of the ball. The biggest gain for the team is when you can take a weakness and make it a strength. Get a starter at the weakest position with your first round pick.
Evaluate the team position by position. Tell me the current weakest position. Get the player that will upgrade this position to a position of strength instead of a position of weakness. Make other coordinators find your weakness again, instead of just allowing them to keep doing what they have been doing for YEARS.
OT in third or 4th round should be able to develop fine behind the two you have, and still be able to work in a pinch..Just my opinion.
A FA OT should be fine, as long as it isn't long term. So FA and 3-4 round developmental guy should be able to be a backup.
1st round -- a guy who will start at the weakest position, or at least gives greatest increase. Lets say you can draft a 95 Lb and you have a 80 Lb for him to replace, but you can draft a 90 S but he will replace a 60 S. You get more bang for your buck by drafting the 90 S, even if the LB is actually rated higher. Get the starter who raises the average the most.
2nd round -- Draft guy who you think will be better and starting by the end of the 1st year. Increase the overall number.
3rd and 4th rounds -- draft guys who have potential to be starters in a year or two, and can take over for current good players who are on the downswing of their careers. IE this is where I would think about TE, OT, Lee's backup, etc.
5th round is my flyer round. Choose a guy with huge upside and huge bust -- Some who can do one thing extremely well, but isn't that good overall.... IE a pass rush only DE, a tweener, a massive speed without hands WR.
6th and 7th round.... guys you think might develop within 3 years.
