Cowboys need a better plan for a successful season on D than "hope & prayer". There are not a lot of quality options available right before League begins Training Camp. So Cowboys need to be aggressive & take some chances on some players, especially on DEFENSE.

Justin Durant is a nice signing but he is what he is. He is a pro's pro, but he's also not durable. Some guys who are still out there still due to injuries/off field issues but are still on right side of 30 and were considered studs (or potential studs) at their positions not too long ago:

OLB Zach Brown (nvm, signed by Bills)
OG Amini Silatolu (nvm, signed by Bears)
ILB Donald Butler
CB Chris Culliver (working out for Cards)
DE Mike Neal
DE Greg Hardy (working out for Jags)

Cowboys could also take the Justin Durant route another step further (see Landry) and bring in some older players who still have proven tread on their tires:

DE Dwight Freeney
CB Antonio Cromartie
WR Anquan Bolden
WR Roddy White
FB John Kuhn

Or trade for a true impact player under 30, role the dice and pay some dang money on D while getting rid of the deadwood (Carr, Williams, Escobar, Wilcox, Church, Mo, future picks, etc.):

DT Mo Wilkerson
S Eric Berry

Or go for the homerun game winning swing, with a 95% chance of a strike out. Trade for a retired, but could be an immediate impact, player:

ILB Patrick Willis
RT Anthony Davis
WR Calvin Johnson
LT D"Brickashaw Ferguson
QB Jake Locker
DT B.J. Raji
LB O.J. Mayo

I've always been a huge Berry fan, I just think the pieces we would have to give up to get him... would only cripple our defense further than it already is non-repairable.

I like the list of old guys with proven tread, maybe proven last year but in the NFL at the end of the year proven tread can turn to bolgna skins in blink. Think Eddie George, that list is full of Eddie Georges

Better than a defensive roster full of George Eddies. With Eddie George there is at least some hope. A young George Eddie? Not much of anything. No offense to all the George Eddie's out there.
