Take what the draft gives you

Last year, I thought we did a great job of executing a plan of understanding there was a ton of DB talent and going with Taco in the 1st as he was one of the last few guys the FO liked as a 4-3 DE. Doing so, they were still able to land 2 great DB prospects in Chido and Lewis who would likely both be gone way earlier in other drafts.

I'm starting to come around on a similar gameplan this year. This draft is pretty deep at WR and interior OL and I think we can get starter level talent in rounds 2-4.

I think LVE and Evans are a bit of a reach at 19, but if the board is wiped out and LB is one of our top needs I think it may be our best option to maximize value in the draft.

Something along the lines of:

1 - LVE (LB) / Evans (LB)
2 - Harrison (S) / Moore (S)
3 - Gallup (WR) / Pettis (WR) / WIlson (WR)
4 - Teller (G)
4 - NNadi (DT) / Senat (DT) / Shephard (DT)

Like the list of names in each round.
Could even see LB again in round 4.

I don't have much faith in Lee staying healthy all year nor do I trust Smith being as athletic as he was pre injury.

Evans is not a reach for me at 19. He Looks like a surefire Day1 Starter.

I like how he plays and he seems to be a solid athlete, I just like him at the end of the 1st/early 2nd due to the lack of experience and reps as an off the ball LB. Same for LVE.

That being said, if we take the above mentioned approach I can get on board.

I like Evans too. I think he's more equipped to play more than adequately sooner than LVE would. LVE might have the higher long term ceiling though.

I agree with the strategy but would have a different approach because I've got a different evaluation of the players. If you take away need I have it:

1st: Wynn>Evans>Hernandez>LVE>McGlinchey
2nd: Miller>Shepard>Price>Phillips>Sutton>Harrison>Jefferson
3rd: Warner>Griffin>Jewell>T.Moore>BJ.Hill>Senat
4th: Hines>Fatukasi>Edmunds>Nnadi>Fountain>Sam>Cichy>T.Walker

So I feel like we can get DT's and LB's in the 3rd & 4th and WR's after the 2nd but there's almost no good OG's after the 1st round. But if a Safety is in range I'd consider trading up for them at the appropriate round as there are very few good ones. Hard to think you'll get to many shots at finding a good one.

If you take McGlinchey, are you moving Collins back to LG?

My concern with a LB after the 1st is you're almost exclusively looking at WILL prospects outside of Jewell and Sam. I like Warner, but I don't think he's a fit for what we actually need.

I'm not taking McGlinchey but he's O-line so I put him in.

At 6-8, he's probably strictly an OT. You aren't using a first round pick on a guy to have him sit the bench as a backup.

So I am not sure I would include him on the list unless the plan would be to move Collins.

You are exactly right, this is what we should always do. The draft isn't Wal-Mart, it's more like an auction. You've got to be well prepared so you know how you are willing to bid but understand that you can't control how it will unfold & you may not get exactly what you want without overpaying.

My argument is that I'm looking for two LB's. One like Warner/Griffen/Leonard and another like Sam/Jewell/Kiser. If we took Evans or LVE then they play all the 3rd LB snaps but I'm okay if we got Warner and one of Jewell, Kiser or Sam and used them to cover some of the run snaps

I don't understand this thought about no good OG's after the first round.

Nelson, Hernandez, Wynn for sure
Connor Williams is projected as guard by many teams
Austin Corbett, Braden Smith
and then Centers who have played guard and could move to guard James Daniels, Billy Price, Frank Ragnow.

That is 9 players that can play Guard, and I am guessing would start for Dallas day one or at least by week 8.

I have a hard time believing all of these guards will go in round 1. A good guard can be found Round 2, IMO.

I could get on board with that, but think I think we'd be missing out in adding a G/DT/S at some point.

What's your take on Leonard? I don't know whether or not I see him in the middle...

Well, I'm projecting Corbett, B.Smith, and Ragnow to be available at 50 and i'm not overly keen on any of them there. Price is a 50/50 IMO but a risk. All the others I think will be gone.

More of a Will.

I have it:
Top 10: R.Smith: WILL only, maybe SS
Top 10: T.Edmunds: WILL/MIKE/SAM
1st: R.Evans: WILL/MIKE/SAM
1st/2nd LVE: WILL only. MIKE in 3rd year
3rd:Jefferson: WILL
3rd: Warner: WILL/SAM
3rd: Griffen: WILL/SAM
4th: Jewell: MIKE only
4th: Cichy: WILL/MIKE
5th: Avery: SAM only
4th Sam: MIKE/WILL
5th: Leonard: WILL
5th: Downs: MIKE
5th: Hamilton: MIKE/SAM/WILL

I think you can get some quality players after the 1st as well, and likely have a shot at a starting caliber player in the 3rd or even 4th just due to the value of the position.

Who are Downs and Hamilton?

Who are Downs and Hamilton?

Both players that got injured this year.

Hamilton for Alabama was a guy I thought might go 2nd round
Devante Downs for Cal was one of the best defensive player in PAC12 before injury
