I had been joking about the number of takeaways we've had this preseason compared to how many we've had during the regular season last year. I finally decided to look it up and what I found was that last season through 16 games we had 16 takeaways 7 ints and 9 fumbles recovered. This preseason in 4 games we've had 10 takeaways through only 4 games. Now idk if that's because we just plain sucked last season or because we've just gotten miles better I'd probably say a little bit of both.

It's the new coaches and the new 4-3 and some good damn players on defense. Wait until all the starters are healthy and then see what happens!

:D

I'm feeling really optimistic that we will do well with takeaways this season, as close as we tend to play everybody a few extra takeaways is the difference between 8-8 and 10-6 or 11-5

I'm encouraged but we all know how different pre season is. Come game day things sometimes don't seem as they were.

One thing Ive noticed from then first game is how we are gang tackling. This is refreshing and should pay dividends too if we can keep it up

At the pace we had takeaways during the preseason, it shouldn't be too difficult for this team to get in excess of 26 during the regular season. In fact, 33 to 40 isn't an absurd amount to anticipate, based on that production.

The team looks a lot more capable in terms of getting after the ball when it's on the ground........save for Wilbur's terrible recovery attempt.

They definitely gotten some lucky bounces. Last night it was Lissemore's foot that popped the ball out and earlier in the preseason a RB just muffed a handoff, IRC.. That's something we haven't seen this team be blessed with in a long time.

I don't care what the reason, the team looks much more active in getting the ball to come out and much more active in getting after it once it is out.

Yeah I just figured adding 10 more takeaways to last years total was a pretty reasonable expectation.

Just as a point of reference, here is roughly what the league averages were last year for takeaways. The league-wide average per team for the year was 25 takeaways. That works out to just over 1.5 takeaways per game. The Cowboys had 16 for the year so 1 per game. (Our offense gave it away 29 times).

So yeah, if we somehow kept up the pace from the preseason, that'd be 40 turnovers for the season (2.5 per game), which would be stellar. Last year, that would have ranked the team 3rd in the league, behind Chicago (44 takeaways) and New England (41 takeaways).

Had we even been average at it last season, we'd have had another 18-20 points, on average, spread over those 16 games. Depending where they hit, that alone could have meant another game or two in the win column.

So we were like 9 turnovers under the average and currently if we can carry over the pace we're on to the regular season we'd be among the best in the league? I'll take that! Hearing the numbers from the best teams in the league at least lets me know 40 turnovers is at least obtainable lol

Yep. And some of those takeaways will prevent some points the other team would score on those drives. Just getting up to the league average, or adding another 9 takeaways over the course of this season, would be really significant. (And of course cutting down on the offensive giveaways as well, we were over the league average there).

Oh! Right. Forgot about that. at ~2.2 pts/possession, that's another 18-20 point swing. That's a big deal.

Interesting fact last time we were in the top 5 in the NFC in turnover differential we went 13-3
