Eagles released LB Takeo Spikes.

This is a sudden change from their previous public stance that Spikes would return. The former Bengal and Bill is recovering from torn rotator cuff surgery and has been an average player since tearing his Achilles a few years back. Omar Gaither could move to the outside now.

He had his cup of coffee.

Wow, he was that bad last year?

If he weren't an Eagle, I'd say it's a shame... He was a true beast at one time.

Amazingly, Dave Spadaro chastised PFT for speculating that Spikes might be released based on his name not being on the team's depth chart.

Guess they were right.

This is the second time I've recently seen the Eagles pull an about-face on their 'public stance'.

I find it curious that some teams merely 'keep quiet' when news leaks while the Eagles choose the 'outright lie' approach.....

EAGLES CUT SPIKES
Posted by Mike Florio on March 6, 2008, 3:09 p.m.

When we mentioned on Saturday that Eagles linebacker Takeo Spikes wasn’t on the depth chart any longer and inferred that this could be a sign that the Eagles might be dumping him at some point in the future, Eagles web guy Dave Spadaro called us “absurd” and “stupid” and “incontinent.” (Okay, we’re exaggerating. He didn’t call us stupid.)

Regardless, Spikes is now no longer an Eagle.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network and our friends at WIP radio in Philly, Spikes has been cut.

The move creates an immediate $5 million in cap space.

Spikes was traded with quarterback Kelly Holcomb and a late-round pick from the Bills to the Eagles in 2007 for defensive tackle Darwin Walker, who eventually was traded to the Bears. None of the three players currently is under contract with any NFL team.

Teams like the Eagles will have all this cap space and no one to sign.

Gotta be careful who they sign... dont want to upset McBaby

My understanding is that he missed the last two games due to the shoulder surgery and perhaps is the reason he was released...Let's face it, otherwise he was their 2nd leading tackler with 2 less games played.

Spikes is done IMO.... He looked shot last year to many 'roids

Spikes is a former Auburn Tiger. For years people have talked about the "weight program" at Auburn. And also, more recently...ahem...Troy.: The HC at Troy is a former AU assistant and very close with former AU HC, Pat Dye. You notice Troy has put a lot of guys in the pros the past few years for such a small school and they also have a top flight CB prospect this year.

Also, look at some of the incredible strength and speed numbers put up by Auburn athletes at this year's Combine. It's very interesting. That RB hardly played at Auburn and he put up incredible numbers at the Combine.

Naw. Uh uh. Say it ain't so D-Ware. Say it ain't so.: :p:

Cincy is desperate for linebackers, he should go back there and play for a small contract.

Just like kearse going back to the titans.

No surprise-even Jim Johnson openly admitted at the Combine last month that Stewart Bradley would start at MLB, grooming Gaither on the outside.

BTW-Eagles have zero depth at LB now. Sure-their core group is very young and very talented, but your only as good as your backups in the long run.
