The fact of the matter is, Spikes is a solid player and an emotional sparkplug. Good trade by the Eagles. Doesn't strike fear in me, but I'd rather face them without him rather than with him.

Then the fact that he's missed 17 games the last 2 years ought to comfort you... particularly since the injury in 04 was an Achilles tendon tear...

He wasn't exactly dominant when he returned last year...

Definite upgrade over Dhani Jones.

Can't be good when Jim Johnson acquires a former Pro Bowler.

If this was the spikes from 3 years ago then.........OK........I wouldn't like this. The last 2 years have been a big drop off. They got better than what they had.......maybe. But this isn't the 03 version of Spikes we're talking about here. The injury looks like its taken its toll on him. And yes, I figure the same fate awaits Greg Ellis.

Can you say Quinten Coryatt or Lavar Arrington? He's the same thing, talented and made of fine china.

He'll be on injured reserve by week 6.

so kelly will be starting by november.. whos going to be starting for takeo spikes and jevon kearse by then?

Your obvious implication is that both McNabb, Feeley, Spikes and the "Freak" will be injured and need replacements. Naughty thought ...I'm hoping everyone on all teams (yes even the Cowboys) remain healthy and compete hard ...you're going to need to!

Wonder what they gave up for him?

... in exchange for veteran defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional 2008 late-round draft pick.

...he carries a hefty price tag at $4.5 million

He's a keeper ...an upgrade from Walker for sure!

Unfortunately its his 2nd year after the Achilles, and he got better and better as the season went on last year. I checked a couple players the year after an Achilles tear, and their 2nd year. Check Julian Peterson, and Derek Burgess. There's a huge difference.

I'm expecting a 100% Spikes, and we'll just have to deal with it.

It surprises me that they intend to play him at DT.

First I heard of that! Are you serious ...where did you hear that, this guy is straight linebacker - one of the best when healthy!

Are you fudging with me sp?

BTW, the term upgrade was a reference to player-to-player...not position-by-posotion!

Note: This goes way back doesn't it ...Cole?

Most Eagle fans over at the nest feel good about the trade also. He and Trotter could prove awesome in 2007. That combination could prove rough on a yound quarterback ...especially with little experience.

so this combination will have no effect on teams with an experienced qb?which teams are u referring to who has a young qb with lil experience?ur little stabs are weak.dont count on a lb who is basically done.achilles injuries end careers, just like our own Ellis who imo is also done.

Not sure why so many don't think this is a decent trade for the Iggles. I happen to think Spikes is a good LBer and should be a good addition to Johnson's Def.

The operant word here is "especially" ... (check out my sig-pic for more experienced ...16 years in the NFL type QBs).

No stabs intended ...none needed. BTW ...achilles injuries are not necessarily career ending injuries carte blonche'.

This move smacks of desperation to me.

Aren't the Eagles the team that sends 30 year old players packing?

And instead they're trading for one?

They've acquired 2 players coming back from serious injury and they've also traded away their best run-stopping defensive tackle.

They finished 26th against the rush last year and look to have gotten worse in that area, not better.

If Spikes can make a comeback at age 31 and be the player he was 4 years ago, it's a good trade. If not, it isn't.

I'm doubtful.

Take a Look ...

Henrica M. J. van der Linden-van der Zwaag1 , Rob G. H. H. Nelissen1 and Jan B. Sintenie2
(1) Orthopaedic Surgery Department, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands(2) Trauma Surgery Department, Medical Centre Alkmaar, Alkmaar, The Netherlands

Abstract Between 1990 and 2001, 292 patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were admitted to our institution. Depending on the day of admission patients were allocated either to the Department of Trauma Surgery or to the Department of Orthopaedics. Two hundred and twelve patients (mean age 37±9.4 years) were treated with surgical suture followed by plaster for 6 weeks. Eighty patients were treated non-surgically with splinting for 12 weeks. For both groups mean follow-up was 6±3 years. There were 14 re-ruptures, ten after surgical repair and four after non-surgical treatment. In the surgical group there were seven major wound problems, 11 minor wound complications and six patients with complaints from the sural nerve. In the non-surgical group one patient suffered a pulmonary embolism after a re-rupture, 3 months after the initial rupture. There was no difference in mean ankle score and patient-satisfaction score between groups. Only 52% regained their original sports activity level, slightly better in the surgically treated group. With a non-significant difference in re-rupture rate but relatively more complications after surgical repair, non-surgical treatment is preferred. With a slightly better recovery of sports activity after surgical repair, this might be used as an argument for surgical treatment in young athletes.
