Taking DBs with our first three picks

Three years ago Dallas drafted DBs Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, Xavier Woods (and Marquez White) in the same draft. All three remaining could become FAs after this season and we go into this draft with CB the only “have to have” position where its highly likely they draft a CB.

Looking at Brugler’s draft guide, I’m wondering if we don’t load up on DBs again. Would you be good with all of our top 3 picks being in the secondary?

Not talking about individual players or asking for “I hate that pick”, but how would you feel if our first three picks were Henderson, Delpit, and Cameron Danzler? I’m taking those positions from Dane Brugler’s ratings, you could pick any group like Henderson, Kristian Fulton and Antoine Winfield.

It would have to depend on the draft board but I don't have an issue with coming out of this draft with 2-3 DBs.

But as for the first three picks? Ehh, the board would have to fall a certain way for that to happen IMO.

If the value is there, sure. But we didn't have to use our top 3 picks in that draft to come away with Awuzie, Lewis, and Woods.

That was a deep CB draft, and we were fortunate to land Awuzie at 60 and Lewis in the 3rd. Woods was also a steal in the 6th.

I think we can address the secondary similarly without having to use #17, #51, and #82 all at CB/S.

I have no problem with them drafting three DBs, but I hate to see DBs being the first three picks. I don’t value DBs as the game changers that some do. I believe games are won in the trenches.

If DB is the BPA at each of those picks, then I'm not against it; however, the probability of DB being the BPA for all of their top 3 picks is very low.

Also, it's not the strongest draft for DBs, IMO.

Another issue is that I would like for the team to get a season under their belt with the new coaching staff before they really focus on specific positions in terms to the draft and free agency.

With regards to specific players, I have reservations about all of the ones you listed.
  • Henderson: Elite athletic but he could easily be a Morris Claiborne type that lacks the mental makeup to be elite in the NFL.
  • Delpit: Terrible tackler and takes terrible angles.
  • Dantzler: Thin build. Speed is a question mark.
  • Fulton: Might be scheme dependent. Played a physical press style but at below 6' and 197 pounds with short arms that's not ideal measurable(s) for that style in the NFL.
  • WInfield: The odds tend to be against 5-9 DBs in the modern big WR era. Will his size make him prone to injury?

I agree, but I think the likely pick at 17 is Kinlaw or Chaisson. Plus we don't have a real need at any other line position besides RDE if you assume McGovern (as a guy they had a high second round grade on) starts at Center. The other OL are Pro Bowlers, Collins who may be at that level already and Conner Williams, who was a second round pick (and played a lot better than posters here gave him credit for).

But I can really see the top three picks all falling as secondary guys.

I would think at some point in the first 3rds, in this class an available WR will be a higher value than a available DB. But it isn't a flat out "not happening" scenario. I could see 2 DB's out of 3 picks easily.

I don't think Henderson is there at 17. Unless someone falls (like Brown or Kinlaw) I don't know that the Cowboys are sold on who would be remaining at 17. Thus in a tradeback scenario I can see you ending up with three picks in the top 65. With first pick I could easily see CB. I would be tempted to trade up from 51 to say late thirties\early 40's and getting anyone really but potentially another CB or S if someone has fallen further than expected. That would leave you with your early 60's pick which might net Chunn or Ashtyn Davis. If we got three solid DB's who upgraded our roster, would be hard to be too disappointed. There would still be tons of WR's available.

love the double or triple dip.
if the board fell right...im good with it...or spread out.

Was it Larrimore or Lattimore? I refuse to look that up. Think my original post was wrong. Motivated forgetting!

Larrimore, which is a Scottish name that means "dumb and lazy". His rookie year I went to Oxnard training camp when you could stand about five feet from the players in drills. In one of the warmups Ratliff was super focused, Larrimore was clowning around. I remember thinking right then that Larrimore would underachieve and Ratliff would make the team.

I’m good with the triple dip at DB just not sure I’d be happy if it’s the 1st 3 picks.

I feel like we really need to get a young edge rusher to develop in the 1st 3 rounds.

I’d be okay with it but wanting us to somehow do more a slot receiver either via trade or FA. A slot receiver is going to start 600-700 snaps in a full season and that’s a bit much for a 4th or later round pick to be a walk up start.

Every year they need an edge rusher and drafting for that position has caused some big flops. Thank God Marinelli is now screwing up somebody else’s war room. He did nothing but hurt this team during his time in a Dallas.

I think 2 out of the 3 first picks will be db. One safety one corner. It all depends how draft falls

I agree, I think 2 of the first 3 are DBs and then out of the three picks in the 3rd & 4th we take a WR and OT.

Not a big fan of the triple dip....especially since we got a couple of kids that I think can develop in Saivion Smith and Chris Westry.
