Taking the Wilcox Challenge

There are basically two kinds of Cowboys fans - those who believe J.J. Wilcox is the man at safety and those who don't. As a member of the first group, I have been repeatedly frustrated by what appears to me to be much of the same thing we have seen for years around Tony Romo: people repeating what they've heard someone else say 'till it becomes the truth. I propose that we resolve this once and for all.

According to Pro Football Focus, Eric Weddle was the best cover safety and best overall safety in the NFL last year. Say what you will about PFF's methods, they generally do get it right with their top ranked players... that is to say, if they have someone ranked highly, that guy is probably a good player. Conveniently (and also according to PFF), Eric Weddle had his best game of the season the same day J.J. Wilcox had his worst -- Week 12. I have just finished watching both week 12 games, defensive snap by defensive snap, on game rewind's "coaches' film".

Put Wilcox's speed and tackling ability in the box with a real FS and the team should be capable of covering the middle of the field, as well as the out edges on cover 2/3 assignments. Oddly enough he didn't grade well in this area this past season but think that is where his potential is (SS) once he can read plays better.

We are most likely to see the same tandem return and Church isn't a bad SS, etc. but are stuck in that there haven't been many heralded FS's to harp on the draft/FA to update the speed in these Def. coverage schemes. DL takes precedent but if a FS fits in the top 3, the team shouldn't hesitate to make that move to cover the Packers/Det type offenses that were successful us in the playoffs.

More and more BTB is becoming a place where our marginal starters are as good or better then the top starters at a given position. Its why I rarely read them anymore

He is a very average looking safety at this point. Really nothing particularly remarkable about him.

As mentioned above, this is his year to show everyone he can be evolve and become a special player.

Saying Wilcox is a quality starter is as crazy as saying

Costa will be a long term starter at OC

Or

Defenses are build be having a great secondary

Or

Oh wait.....

I think the point that some acknowledge but fail to make the point is Wilcox
only played one season at safety before being drafted yet here with limited
experience he is being called average. If Wilcox is average with such limited
time at that position I call that remarkable, even at this point.

Someone said up thread this is a big season for Wilcox and I agree. This is
the year that Wilcox makes a big leap or I have been mistaken. I don't think so.

Wilcox speed and tackling have been seen? People forget that the NFL isnt played in straight lines. Wilcox speed is worthless because he cant change directions very well. We have seen this so many times over and over again. His tackling? UNless the guy is running right at him he struggles. Again we have seen all this over and over again. Think the team picked a good player to replace Church, but the problem is Church was going to be the starter for 3 yrs after they drafted him. So they tried to make him a single high safety which he is not.

Is this convenient?

Would it have been much more difficult to watch two different players in two different games with different reports on performance if they didn't occur in the same week?

I think some of his angles stem from his inexperience @ S and show him being either overly aggressive or hesitant in his read which leaves him vulnerable to cut backs. I just think Wilcox could replicate Church's role @ SS in the box if given the opportunity but agree that wasn't what he was drafted for evidently.

They Broke down JJ's game on TC at the end of the yr and they talked about JJ not being very good in the box.

I don't agree. I think Wilcox's abilities fit well at FS. He just needs to keep working on his understanding of the game. There are times he shows his range to be in position to make a play on the ball and times he breaks late or takes a poor angle. These are things that can be fixed.

I know about Wilcox grading out poorly in the box, I remembered replying I was surprised of that fact in the initial thread. Church will likely start but he is at his ceiling. Wilcox's potential is definitely higher than Church's going forward whether starting @ SS or FS.

I agree that he could turn out to be good/great FS esp considering the lack of talent being available at the position recently (draft and FA). Ideally, a third S with some speed can be brought in,and the team could let them all battle it for the starting positions but do understand Safety isn't a priority in the off season (luxury pick type).
