Was talking to a new friend today and he wanted to talk about football. He's a GA Tech fan so it started there and branched out into more general SEC and ACC football and occasionally beyond that.
Eventually I told him I was a big Cowboys fan and he related he was long ago. So we started talking about the 'good ole days'. He was born in Lubbock and his family started in the Pampa area where they still have a small farm that I guess is idle right now. His father is in his 90s and lives near Brownsville now although he and his son, my friend, lived in Atlanta until my friend graduated from HS. He then went on to college in Mercer but when he graduated HS his father and family moved back to Texas....to Dallas.
So my friend would go home for the summer and find a job in Dallas. His father took him to a game at the Cotton Bowl that year. He told me it was 1966 and they had beat a team that day to advance to the championship game. Well, I thought he was talking about the GB game in Dallas that year so I started to talk about it. He said no it wasn't GB but it was Cleveland and then they played the game where Bart Starr scored a QB sneak.
I told him that was the Ice Bowl but that was 67. So he gets his father on speakerphone and we all start talking about the Cowboys and those two seasons. His father, who I just met on the phone, was a huge Dallas fan since moving back to Texas from Atlanta and got excited. Ninety years old and was relating events like they were yesterday. Hope I'm like that at 90. Heck, I hope I just get to 90.
So we figure out the game they were initially thinking about was in 67 and he said yeah I think you're right then went right on talking about the game.
I'm not going to bore you more with all the details but the moment they remembered best was a big play to 'Robert Hayes' from Don Meredith. They both told me that Meredith must have thrown the ball 60 yards in the air and while Hayes was behind both defenders he suddenly took off with a tremendous burst of speed (his father said he hit another gear) and he somehow impossibly caught up to the ball and scored. They really couldn't remember much beyond that.
What was so nostalgic was I also remembered that play as well and it was very comforting to visit that moment long ago with two people I had just recently met. Whatever common bonds that bring us together is good but for it to be a shared memory of Cowboys football from long ago made it so much the sweeter.
I'll have some more stories from time to time. In the meantime if someone can find that play from 12/24/67 in the Cotton Bowl I'd appreciate it.
BTW, Dallas won that game against mightly Cleveland 52-14 and played a week later in the Ice Bowl which I'd rather not talk about ritht now.ing
