Not one single solitary post in either of those two links means anything. I only read about two.

All teams fans think the players that left suck and the new one's they get are great. The 49er fans think Allen is a great pickup... lol. They're in for a rude awakening. They think they're getting the 1996 Larry Allen.

And do you really think any of them will have good things to say about Kosier?

I put WAY more stock into the fact that so many teams were trying to sign him this offseason and that a lot of magazines had him as a top 5 sleeper free agent.

Question: When we let Ron Stone go in free agency, how many Cowboy fans would've told you we'd miss him? Did we miss him? Of course not. Was he a pro bowler for NY? Absolutely.

You just wasted a lot of your time, I'm afraid.

Interesting perspective other team fans have:

For perhaps the first time I agree with bubbles.... everytime I turned on a dallas game the past few years Julius Jones was making it to the second and third level before even getting touched once. Announcers past have commented on holes being large enough for a semi-truck to get threw them, well these holes were large enough to hide sadaam & bin laden in.

I must have missed these huge holes.

And a good post by "TMForever":

Some Cowboys fans' knock on Allen was his inability to pull or get to the second level in recent years, not his pass blocking ability. The main knock on him there was his immobility in recent times, and even though he was fine once he got his hands on his man, there were plenty of times he got beat off the snap and never fully engaged them.

He also wasn't nearly as dominating in general as he has been in the past, if you look at Dallas' run statistics from last season. There were only 4 games where the Cowboys averaged over 4 YPC running to the left last year, and three of them came after the starting LT went down.

As for Kosier, most fans I've come across are guardedly optimistic, and despite whatever misgivings they've had about Allen, they don't expect him to be replaced by any means. Also, if you look at your statistics for last year, you actually ran the ball to the left side better on the whole after Kosier was inserted as the starter at left guard although he obviously wasn't the sole reason for that improvement. You averaged 4+ YPC to the left in 7 games, 6 of those with Kosier in. Kosier allowed 4.5 sacks in 11 starts which projects to around 6.5 over 16 games. Not dominating, but not terrible.

Also, bear in mind that his 11 starts at left guard last season were the most he had at one position in his brief career. It's certainly not uncommon for a player that is shuffled from one line position to another frequently to develop into a solid player once he's settled into one.

Lastly, a direct statistical comparison of each player's last 3 seasons courtesy of Stats Inc.

In the last 3 seasons, Larry Allen started 48 games, Kosier 40.

Allen had 14 penalties(.29 per start, 4.64 per 16 games) Kosier 8.(.2 per start, 3.2 per 16 games)

Allen, 114 penalty yards(2.38 PS, 38.1/16 G), Kosier 54.(1.35 PS, 21.6/16 G)

Allen allowed 10.5 sacks(.22 PS, 3.5/16 G), Kosier 17(.43 PS, 6.88/16 G).

Allen accounted for 49.5 sack yards(1.03 PS, 16.48/16 G), Kosier 95.5.(2.39 PS, 38.24/16)

Allen was called for holding 7 times(.15 PS/2.4/16 G), Kosier 3 times.(.08 PS, 1.3/16 G)

To summarize, Kosier may or not be better than he's been perceived, might have been somewhat overpaid, but that happened all around the league after the new CBA raised the cap. Larry Allen is not who he once was and is not getting younger, and frankly was easily overpaid for where he's at in this stage of the game.

Didn't mean to drag it out, but I'm a stat idiot by nature and hey, it's the slowest part of the offseason.

Good luck to your Lions with your new coach this year!

The one thing about Kosier last year was that he was shuffled around quite a bit on the Lions O-Line as he would play both guard spots and right tackle. Giving up 6 sacks a year at guard is very poor, but I'm pretty positive that some of the sacks he gave up where when he moved to right tackle.

I did see huge holes for Julius....once in a great while. That's the thing with Allen that most people don't understand. They would always show a highlight of him pancaking somebody, but they would never show the countless times he'd completely whiff when in open space, he wouldn't block the backside defender, and how he was useless when he had to pull or help block on a screen play. People just assume that because he gets the occasional pancake, he's still a really good player. Sort of like Eli Manning fans raving about Eli's TD pass against Denver when he's been inaccurate and making poor decisions.
