Is it too soon to talk about Tampa?

Obviously, we’ve got training camp to get through. We’ve got players to waive (down to 75 on Sept. 1st; 53 by Sept. 5th), perhaps players to acquire, and almost assuredly will have injuries (hopefully minor) to account for. The fine-tuning will begin in Oakland (Aug. 13th); then, for the first game in Cowboys Stadium against the Titans (Aug. 21st). The next game against the Niners (Aug. 29th) should allow us a real look at the starters for much of the game, and then a preseason wrap-up in Minnesota (Sept. 4th) will define the roster.

Sunday, September 13th, will be Cowboy Kickoff Day. The defense will do its best to limit those pirate cannons from firing at anytime other than during the halftime show. Mike Jenkins will have the opportunity to avenge his infamous missed tackle on new Buccaneer back Derrick Ward. Gerald Sensebaugh’s return to Florida will be tested by the talented, yet oft-injured Kellen Winslow and the former towel-thrower, Antonio Bryant. Will it be Byron Leftwich trying to make the offense forget about Chucky?

More after the jump.

On the flipside, new head coach Raheem Morris posts consistency in his defensive-laden resumé:

Morris takes over a defense that has produced 36 Pro Bowlers since 1996, the most in the NFL, and finished as the NFLs top-ranked defense two times (2002 and 2005). The past 13 seasons have also seen the Buccaneers defense rank in the Top 10 on 11 occasions and in the Top 5 eight times.

Romo will have to be accurate against a good trio of Cover-2 safeties, Tanard Jackson, Jermaine Phillips, and Sabby Piscitelli. Corners Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib will be looking to corral the Cowboys receivers. Dallas’ running game and reliability in tight ends, Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett, should help keep Morris’ secondary honest.

This website has the Cowboys as 3-point favorites with the over/under resting at 42. Here’s some of what they say about the game:

Both teams have impressive running back corps and will lean on the rushing attack while the passing game works out the kinks. Totals bettors should look to the under on the 42 points, with the ground game eating up the clock.

Tampa Bay added Derrick Ward this offseason and he will share carries with Earnest Graham. The Cowboys have a healthy Marion Barber and Felix Jones behind Romo. Those two were on pace for a huge year last season before injuries took out Jones and slowed Barber.

It’s early to talk about Tampa and there is much work ahead. Assuming the coaches have already scouted the Bucs, we might as well brainstorm the match-up as well. It certainly beats wondering what went wrong with last season!

If the Boys are not careful they may lose their opener. I think it is going to take a game or two for them to learn how to win without TO.

When Aaron Novinger finally talks about the Cowboy offense, the passing game with Romo is first mentioned then he fails to mention T. Choice when talking about our running game.

On the other hand it's never too soon to talk about Tampa.

It's our game to loose and I think our offensive weapons, you all should know who....i don't got to mention names everyone knows about what this offense can do....

I think we run all over them in the first half and air it out in the 2nd half. It'll probably be sloppy at first, the first two weeks of the NFL usually are, but I think we'll win handily.

Remember, this is the same Bucs defense that we played last year...without anyone of consequence on the field (thanks Brad Johnson).

I rather talk training camp and pre season prep at this point but since we're talking week 1 what the heck. I don't give Wade much credit beyond being a significant DC, but if there is one thing he's shown while coaching this team is he starts off the first 3 weeks strong. That's my input.

It will take TB some time also for their new adjustments.
I'll take adjusting to losing 1 WR over a coach.

Good topic though, even as you said, it's early. But is better than some other topics.

This isn't the same defense as last year. Morris isn't running the cover 2 anymore. That is the biggest reason they released Derrick Brooks. So the team will be learning a new defense.

Cowboys 30
Bucs 13

A Witten TD, Barber 12 yard TD, a defensive score, and 3 field goals from Folk.

They won't be able to establish the run and our defense puts a lot of pressure on their inexperienced QBs.

Book it.

Aren't the Bucs currently rebuilding?

My question is genuine. I have no idea.

Like everyone else on here, I hope that Felix Jones does not have any lingering issues with his toe injury, we can use his offensive spark this year.

Yep.

New odds for the Super Bowl were updated I read somewhere. Tampa Bay has the exact same odds of winning it all as, drumroll please....Detriot.

I cannot put together a game plan in which Tampa Bay beats us.

This article from Fox Sports is a bit interesting too. We rank 3rd, Tampa Bay is 28th and could even be lower than that. Take it for what it's worth, print it and use as emergency toilet paper if it pleases ya.

Looking further Down the line at the schedule... Of course you can't predict how good or bad teams are going to be or I would be a rich man:

Tampa: Might start a rookie QB or Slow draw Leftwich= Win
Giants: At Home, Season series split= Win
Carolina: Tough game At Home = Should be a win
Denver: new Coach, Mess at QB, maybe no Marshall if suspended= Win
KC: New everything= Win
Atlanta= Tough Game at home, They played over there heads last year= Win
Seattle= They will be better but game is at home= Win

So the sched. is favorable 6-1 or 7-0 is a poss..

Of course, the Cowboys, as you suggest, could lose the opener if they aren't careful. But, the Bucs have a lot of negatives going for them in the opener.

They have a new inexperienced head coach;
They are installing a new defense, doing away with the cover 2;
They have big questions at quarterback;
They have linebacker issues, cutting Derrick Brooks in the off-season;
Ronde Barber is getting older, and may not flourish out of the Cover 2.

The Cowboys will match up very well against the Bucs.
