They have learned the hard way to make them very strong.

That's NOT TRUE!

Those fences have been historically protecting the fans for a generation. In fact, it's one of the first and original safety features that NASCAR has had in place for a loooooong time.

Never the less, I saw every lap of this race.........as I've seen every lap either live or on TV for twenty years. Yeah, I'm a big NASCAR guy. And for those of you wondering, THIS finish will go down as one of the top 5 highlight films in NASCAR of all time................Those of you who saw this thing live today saw history.

The race itself was great as well. Talladega is usually one of the best stops on the circuit (there's two races a year there) anyway. My guy crashed out in "the big one" on lap #7. What's "the big one"? "The big one" happens either at Talladega or Daytona, as these are the only restrictor plate races on the tour. What's a "restrictor plate"? It's a device they put on the carburetor to actually slow the cars down. If not for the restrictor plate, the cars would turn into aircrafts because of the speeds.

Anyway, I was going to OP on this subject later, but you beat me to it. Anyone who is curious or asks "What's all the fuss about NASCAR anyway" should watch this race. If this race doesn't get your blood going, then you'll just never "get" NASCAR.....................

I'm referring to the Bobby Allison crash. Parts from the car went in to the stands. The fence was strong but not strong enough. The Richard Petty crash at Daytona was pretty bad also.

It made NASCAR step up the protection for both the fans and drivers.

I'm also a life long NASCAR and dirt track racing fan. I used to help my ex brother in law in the pits when he was racing sprint cars.

OK............

I know both of those incidents that you're referring to. But if you calculate the number of races and number of fans AT the races over the years, the "Fans getting hurt or killed" at a NASCAR event are minuscule at best and practically non-existent in the modern era.

I've been to a good 25-30 races in person, and don't recall a single incident at the track. And, like I said, I don't think I've missed a lap since 1988 or so on the TV or otherwise, and I remember maybe two or three stories about a fan being rushed to the hospital over flying debri or anything similar.

In fact, that wreck at the end of the race today with Cousin Carl...........I was sure that some fan, or many fans got hurt with all that stuff flying THROUGH the fence!! Had that fence would've given way, many people would've gotten SERIOUSLY injured or killed. But I haven't heard of anything yet....................

..

Every weekend when my wife turns the race on, I just kinda roll my eyes and go about my business. I usually make my way back for the last 10 laps or so cause they can usually be pretty exciting..........but today.......WOW. Fricken WOW, is all I can say.

I have two new favorite drivers. Carl Edwards for the way he conducted himself in the post race interview, and the Kowloski (spelling), kid who won it.

Incredible race.

AH!!!!!!!!!! JUST HEARD.............

Seven fans were injured from the debri flying through the fence. No one seriously injured.

For the record, Cousin Carl Edwards is my least favorite guy out there. Rousch/Fenway Racing in general is the enemy. But I do like Matt Kenseth.

That's what they call a "racing incident" out there today and was technically no one's fault. That's why Carl was so gracious toward Brad Keselowsky. Normally, Edwards is a world class "***" and no small jerk. I'm not alone in not liking him either. He grates upon and irritates a good deal of people, not only fans but especially in the garage.

Really?

See? NASCAR discussions among the faithful are right up there with politics and religion................I'd like to meet your Dad, he sounds like he's "one of us".

I hafta' say that the Dallas Cowboy will always be my No. 1 thing, but along side my "Star" tattoo is a smaller "#24" also. I just got the bug a long time ago, and going to races in person doesn't help to squelch the addiction.

I know it's not for everyone and I don't try to get everyone else as much in love with NASCAR as I am. For a lot of folks, it's "just cars going around in circles". Of course, if they gave me ten minutes with them, I could explain how every track and race and set-up and event is different. But somehow, NASCAR brings out the "don't want to hear it" thing in a lot of folks, so I gave up trying to get everyone on board a long time ago. I know that I enjoy the hell out of it..............

Just a few weeks ago, after the Final Four was over and before baseball began and the draft, a local radio show was talking about how "these are the dead days for sport" and how there was nothing going on. I called in and said that there was a major American sporting event going on, where over 200,000 people were in attendance, with another 50,000 staff and crew around. How this even generated MILLIONS for the community where it was being held, etc, etc................

I didn't say what if was, and he had no inkling as to what I was talking about. I give him a break because it's Hawaii, and Hawaii is NO NASCAR hot-bed.

When I finally told him it was the NASCAR race at Texas, and it was a big deal because Jeff Gordon not only won, but ended his winless streak and won at one of only two tracks left he hasn't won at, he STILL just poo-pooed it as nothing really. NOTHING REALLY??? One NASCAR race is usually better attended than any one Super Bowl!! Not on TV of course, but the "live attendance" at the gate? Easily............

So, yeah.........there WAS something going on this week in the American sports world. Too bad so few appreciate it.

Before anyone blows a fuse, I'm not saying that NASCAR can compete with the NFL. NOTHING comes close to Pro Football in America. Even in MY book! But, you gotta' give NASCAR it's props for putting 150,000 to 250,000 butts in the seats, week in and week out! From January through November!!! Every year!!!!

Whatever people want to think of NASCAR (too bad it became a political ping-pong ball), it's a major player in the American sports lexicon.........

JMO but it's taken small steps back the last couple of years. I believe the ratings are down some. I was one who watched every lap of every race. But that changed when Big E died. Many of my friends are just casual fans these days also.

People don't "hate" him ala Jeff Gordon or Kurt Busch..............

NASCAR folks don't like drivers who stray from the farm and single themselves out for attention...........

Edwards does this back-flip thing when he wins races. He's a little mouthy. And then there's the incident when he jabbed and fake-punched his own team mate Matt Kenseth.

His biggest problem is that he's young and he wins. And that usually doesn't go over well in NASCAR. Edwards and Kyle Busch are the latest in a long line, since Jeff Gordon, who are resented for coming into NASCAR at a young age, "not earning their stripes" and winning. As if it's their fault................

NASCAR fans want the drivers to "earn" their ride over several years, respect the "established" guys, and play nice until their allowed to race. Those days are gone, but a lot of fans don't like it.

Personally, I don't like "Concrete Carl" (he's called that to, 'cause he races good on the concrete tracks) because, for starters, he drives a Ford. THAT is sin No. 1. Second, all of the above, BECAUSE he drives a Ford! If he drove a Chevy, with all of the above, he'd be just another Kevin Harvick. A young, aggressive kid who wins and doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks.........BUT, he drives a Chevy, so he's alright with me. If he drove a Ford..................he's Carl Edwards, who I can't stand.

Some people don't like Kyle because like you said he's young and winning but also because he has the audacity to give Jr a taste of his own medicine last year. :laugh2:

Yeah, he had the chutzpah to actually RACE with Tony Stewart, his ex-teammate during his ROOKIE YEAR too. Heaven forbid such a thing.
Remember that? Tony was beside himself that this kid actually was RACING ME!

Anyone who appreciates NASCAR and loves the sport has to appreciate this kid. Like him or not, he already the "next coming" of the #3 and the #24 and #48. He's gonna' easily surpass Jeff Gordons win total, whatever that ends up being. He'll probably be the guy who surpass's David Pearson's 105 wins. Jeff is at 82, and he'll pass Yarborough, Waltrip, and Davey Allison any time now. But that 105 number, that's gonna' be tough for Jeff to reach.

Kyle Busch is already at 14. If he keeps this up, he's gonna' be a multiple champion and have good shot at 105. No one is ever going to catch Richard Petty's 200, that's a conceded given. The only other guy with a shot at the 105 wins is Jimmy Johnson, as of now. Jimmy's at 41 wins and is still a very young guy. We'll see..................

But if he's not liked by some (which appears to be the case), it's for several reasons................His brother Kurt's splash into the sport didn't help matters for Kyle. Also, he's not a "good ole boy" from the south, he's from Vegas. That STILL will get you in a little trouble in NASCAR. And, of course, he's good and he wins, and HE'S JUST TO YOUNG to be getting away with THAT. The NASCAR garage and fan base STILL has this "you gotta' be in the sport a long time and earn your cred" thing before they'll give you any respect. It's been going on since Jeff Gordon came from California/Indiana and displaced The Old Man during the 90's.

Now, they're talking about concerns for "NASCAR safety" because of yesterdays crash.

If anything, I think that the fact that no one got killed or even seriously hurt already speaks to how GOOD the safety IS! A few fans got very minor scrapes and scratches, and NOTHING happened to any driver! Not a scratch.

I'm biased of course, but I'm proud of NASCAR's safety program for what DID NOT happen to anybody in this incident.
