Jerry Jones loves Jason Garrett, today.

In the next few years, Jason Garrett may become a head coach somewhere.

But to assume that Jason Garrett is the automatic successor to the next Dallas head coach (be it Wade Philips, Norv Turner, or somebody else) is naive.

Many things could happen to prevent Garrett's succession. Here's a few:

1. Maybe Garrett doesn't live up to expectations as offensive coordinator. If Romo performs poorly, it'll be tough for Garrett to look good. If the offense has a series of injuries, Garrett's offense could look ineffective.

2. Maybe another assistant coach does an even better job than Garrett.

3. Maybe Philips, Turner or whoever turns out to be a highly successful head coach of the Cowboys. Does Jerry fire the highly successful head coach to hire an unproven one? It'd be a tough move.

4. When Garrett is ready for a head coaching shot, who is to say that Dallas is his dream situation? Maybe he'd prefer a place where he had more control of personnel decisions and/or a less intrusive owner ....

So all I'm saying is this:

Garrett has a shot at becoming the head coach eventually, sure, but it is way too early to assume that it will happen.

A lot can happen in a year or two.

maybe, maybe, maybe............ maybe we should just let this thing play out and see what happens! none of us have a clue... not even the one writing the check!;)

:hammer:

No matter how you look at it, I think it's a mistake to put all your eggs in one basket with one coach....Why not hire ALL young innovative types at every position and move forward like we did in 1989... some of them worked out, some didn't but re-treaded losers are not the way to go especially with the head coach position...

On the other hand, what happens if we let it play out, as you say, and Garrett isn't an immediate success? What happens if it takes him 3 years?

I can imagine all the pissing and moaning that would go on. Garrett, Jerry and basically the whole world would never hear the end of it.

No thank you.

So you're saying that it might happen but maybe it won't.

OK, gotcha, .. way to go out on a limb :laugh2:

Don't forget that Todd Bowles is a rising star according to Parcells as well.

In two years it could come down to Garrett or Bowles if Garrett isn't named head coach right now.

I'm going to take the opposite view and say mash the accelerator on Garrett. Or crank up the voume if you will.

Call me naive. Call me optimistic. Just don't call me late to dinner which is what I think most of the skeptics are going to be on Garrett. Oh, they'll play it all up as if they knew he had it in him all along, and that's fine.

Me, I'm not going to hide from it. Others may disagree, and that's cool. It will give us something to talk about. If Garrett becomes our HC tomorrow, or if he's our OC for a year or 2 and then moves on to be the HC somewhere else, he is getting his first real shot in Big D.

Damn the torpedoes man, full speed ahead.

Those who know me from my time on these forums know I am not an overly optimistic person. I don't believe in faery tales and platitudes. I'm sold on this guy.

I wish it was for the HC job, but Jerry would get crucified and so would Garrett. Better that we take it in stages I suppose. But for heaven's sake don't slow down. Better if the masses have to struggle to keep up.

In the immortal words of Tim "The Toolman" Taylor..."more power!"

Doesn't often happen but I'm going to go the other way. He's signed. If he ends up being as good as many believe he might be, the opportunity to keep him will be there. If not, he's got room to improve. Room to refine his craft. There's no rush. He's not going to burn out in the next few years. I'm going to go on record as let him get more experience. Can't hurt either way so far as I can see.

I agree...lets take that gamble and Hire Garrett.

I mean it's not like people all over the league are saying he's a bum.

He's getting raves reviews from people who know what they are talking about.

He typed 9 or 10 paragraphs to say something that didn't even need said.

"Maybe he will, maybe he won't, maybe he won't in Dallas, what will Jerry do?" :laugh1:

I don't feel the need to speculate at all myself, but thanks for asking.

It just struck me as funny.

I like this. Two young coordinators in competition for the HC job.

Makes it more likely we strike gold for the next HC. That's if neither of them get it this time around.

It's a message board. He's doing what it's set up to facilitate.

No more to it then that.

Also, Wade Phillips, in a fit of munchies, could eat Jason Garrett, thus preventing this ascent to HC one day.

No offense taken.

I'm reacting to all of those people who are way out on the limb.

It is one thing for guys, such as Hostile, to want Garrett to become head coach. That's a statement of one's opinion. No problem there.

But it is another thing to assume as a fact certain that Garrett will be the Cowboys head coach in 2 to 3 years. That's simply incorrect.

It is, in fact, far from certain that Garrett will be the Cowboys head coach in 2 to 3 years.

But in many of today's and yesterday's posts people are saying that Garrett is the inevitable future head coach. I've heard the same thing on ESPN Radio.

It bugs me when I hear that kind of faulty thinking.

Hence the post.

It could work out. Buying 10,000 shares of stock of an unproven company at $1 could be your ticket to financial independence as well. In both cases, it's an unwaranted gamble, with hope trumping good sense. Let's hope that Jerry runs his organization a little more responsibly.
