Talking to scouts throughout the season, Basham was viewed as a possible top-100 draft pick. After his strong finish to the season and impressive week in Mobile, the better question is whether or not he belongs in the top 50. Basham was routinely dominant in one-on-one drills, using his combination of initial burst and power to penetrate the pocket. link

Will McClay isn't keen on using early round selections on small school players, preferring instead to target guys from the power five conferences who should have an easier time acclimating to the NFL game.

With both options on the board, McClay will probably side with someone like Jordan Willis over Basham, if the grades are similar.

I'm not against going after small school studs, but Dallas did get too cute with the approach in the past.

It's an interesting debate.

If we wanted Basham I think it might be with our 4th at best since we don't have a 5th...if he even lasts that long. I think more likely it would be our 3rd, pass rushers don't last long and picking at the end of the round makes decisions a lot harder.

Let's not forget one of the best in DeMarcus Ware came from Troy.
If there's a kid who really stands out at his position, you shouldn't let the small school label scare you off....and especially when you're sitting low at #28.

The Big Tuna wanted to select Marcus Spears instead of DeMarcus Ware at #11 because he didn't believe the LSU DE would drop to their second pick in round one, #20.

And I was simply pointing out that Will McClay is well known for preferring players from big schools in the early rounds. McClay carries a lot of weight within the organization, but he isn't the only voice.

Agree with McClay. Usually small school stars are at small schools for reasons above the neck. Stupid, substance, behavioral, etc.

That's not necessarily true. Some of it has to do with them not having the "measureables" to get to a big school.

Or the ability to be seen. A lot of coaches in high schools that don't compete for the playoffs or have a lot of high level talent play for them don't have the ability or drive to get guys noticed. There's thousands upon thousands of high schools in America. Guys aren't all going to be noticed.

This is true. I have a close friend when coming out of highschool was getting some notice from Baylor for a scholarship for womens basketball. Her coach didn't do what he should have to help get her noticed and she ended up going to some lower division school where she dominated. At least she got her free education.

Agreed that McClay likes those power 5 conference schools but he needs to be reminded that some of the all time greats were small school gems: Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Night Train Lane, Chuck Bednarik, Deacon Jones, Gene Upshaw, Mel Blount, Charles Haley, Larry Allen, Jason Taylor, Demarcus Ware, Robert Mathis, Jared Allen, etc.

I'm a big Basham fan, should be great value in the 3rd.

True. I'm all too familiar with the recruiting process now that my son is going through the process now. What they don't tell you. LOL!

It takes work on the coaches part. Sending out film, forging relationships with regional scouts and getting players in front of them is just a part of what coaches should be able to provide. Unfortunately too many players don't have that benefit.

Tarell Basham – Edge – Ohio, Basham, the 2016 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, showed good quickness off the snap able to engage and get into the offensive lineman instantly. He displayed strong hands as he would knock back lineman when he planted them into their chests. He can convert speed to power and walk back the tackle into the quarterback’s lap. While he was solid with his run defense there were, times were, he gave up the edge and lost containment allowing the ball carrier to breakout for a long run. What teams will need to figure out is whether Basham will need to add more weight and play as a hand in the dirt defensive end or stand him up as an outside LB in a 3-4 defense
