Taylor: Garrett has an edge his four predecessors didn't have
Ron T. Ennis / Special to DMN Coach Jason Garrett's (right) attention to detail and offensive lineman Tyron Smith could help the Cowboys get over the hump in their quest to win a sixth title.

The Dallas Cowboys’ new head coach, Jason Garrett, has something his past four predecessors didn’t that could get the Cowboys over the hump to their sixth championship.

According to SportsDay’s Jean-Jacques Taylor, who was writing for Sporting News, Garrett knows what makes owner and GM Jerry Jones tick. As Taylor points out, Garrett played for Jones at one point in his career.

Taylor writes, “Garrett got good results [last season] by paying more attention to detail and holding players accountable. The players respected the discipline, and they responded late in the season.”

Campo had no history with Jones?

Exactly. Therefore highlighting the ineptness of the Dallas media in order to get a story out.

True however what kind of input did Campo have? I think since the Campo day Jones has taken more input from the men he hires as the HC. Dave I felt never had a chance he was so over shadowed by Jerry.

Injuries and poor QB play had more to do with it. Poor Campo's teams were absolutely ravaged by injuries during his 3 years as HC.

I agree that had something to do with it but I don't see where Campo had much input on draft picks or FA. It was Jerry and Lacewell.

Jerry also changed how that would be done starting with the hiring of Parcells, he clearly had input and brought in FA who he knew and same can be said for Wade.

Having Jimmy Johnson on speed dial is not a bad thing either:bow:

Jerry maintains the fact that the powers of the head coach in every contract from Jimmy to Wade were exactly the same. Campo had the same contractual power as Bill. He just chose not to really use it, it seems.

Uhhh yeah.

IMHO, the Redhead has two advantages that will prove invaluable and that precious few Dallas coaches of the past have enjoyed . . . (1) Jerry's total confidence and (2) his ear. In lieu of that, past history suggests credibility with the players would inevitably become compromised.

This and additionally, Garrett is much smarter.

Yep, I've always thought this was Garrett's biggest plus, even before he was promoted. It's not that he's some genius, it's not that he carried a clipboard here, it's not that he has an Ivy League degree. It's that he's in the freaking family portrait. He's been a Jerry project for years now, and Jerry goes to the wall to assist his projects.

So he's going to get whatever he wants, as Jerry made clear.

That doesn't mean what he wants is always golden, though.

I'd much rather have the head coach know what makes his team tick, but I guess JJT thinks knowing what makes Jerry Jones tick is more important to the success of the Cowboys.

I hope he sleeps well at night thinking about the hard hitting journalism that he has produced lately. I mean, now that Dirk showed Romo that winning the ring is what its all about and Garrett holds an edge over SB winning coaches Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcell because he knows what makes Jerry tick, how can the Cowboys ever lose another game?
BRILLIANT!

There seems to be a majority consensus that Wade was the entire problem. I realize Red turned it around some. There has to be some responsibility for the previous failure on Red and the players. How much I don't know. I'm not completely sold on how good this team is yet. They have a lot to prove. I'm not certain how sold I am on Red either. Mostly but not certainly.
