I was reading a scouting report on Mays and they said that Mays only had 1 int his senior year but that because of the scheme he was in at USC. They said that Polumula(spelling) only had 1 int his senior year and look how he turned out as a pro. Does anybody who watches USC know if it was the scheme or just the fact that he is not a ballhawk? Chris in SoCAL or Hostile, how about you guys?

2 things are true. USC's scheme keeps the free safety back (more so than any team I have seen)and asks the safety to avoid the big play at all costs. The second thing that is true is Taylor needs to improve his play on the ball. Too many times he would try to kill someone when it appeared he could have gone for the ball.

Now a bunch of posters will come in now with the he makes no plays comments. That's simply not true. He led the team in tackles this year despite missing a game with an injury and playing 18 yards off the line of scrimmage. He also was named AP All-American 3 times. The AP is the standard for All-American teams so I'm guessing they don't hand out their honors to guys who "make no plays".

Soon someone will say those honors and stats and his physical skills (40 time) don't matter. They only matter when supporting their own pet cat.

Last, it appears that the Dallas Cowboys and other NFL teams have a first round grade on Mays. They, like me and the AP All-American committee, are of course just being fooled by his workout warrior status.

i admit i havent watched him play but the highlights of him remind of roy williams but with better speed. He looks for a guy who goes for big hits and but not really good in coverage. I would perfer Earl Thomas any day becuase he is different to most of the safetys we have had in a while becuase he is great in coverage

I said it once, I'll say it again. Take away his size/speed ratio and he's an UDFA. And those all american honors are so rigged it not even funny

Two things...
Take away his size/speed ratio and he's an UDFA.
Lucky for him because he gets to bring his size and his speed with him into the NFL.

And those all american honors are so rigged it not even funny
Of course they are.

I'm not one for taking Mays, but this line makes no sense. You can't "take something away from a player". That's like me saying, "take away your arms, and you can't bowl worth a ****." Of course if you take away size and speed he would be an UDFA. I think that is true for almost every NFL player. Take away Chris Johnson's speed, and he is an UDFA. Oh, well, guess what. He has speed. "Take away three wins from the Cowboys and they don't make the playoffs." :bang2: Holy crap, give me size and speed and I'll be an NFL player.

In the past, I've been fairly critical of Mays and his lack of play making. However, from what I can tell, the scheme "excuse" seems to hold up. It really looks like Mays was asked just to play a lot of single-deep safety and to not take a lot of risks.

Just watch this video and notice how far off the ball Mays is playing...

People can continue to make all the excuses in the world for him, but the game tape doesnt lie. Takes bad angles. Misses tackles. Is an absolute no show in coverage. Doesnt get interceptions or even get his hands on the ball for a pass defensed. Virtually every draft guide scouting report on him is the same.

He's a physical freak almost, but as a pure football player he is mediocre at best. He "looks" like a first rd pick but plays like a guy who barely warrants draft consideration. He'll be one of the biggest busts in this draft IMO and somebody will move him to LB within 3yrs.

That video is hardly a ringing endorsement for Mays and I'm not even paying attention to his bad angles and poor ball skills.

Mays would not know a wrap up tackle if it hit him in the face. He is the archetype of everything that is fundamentally wrong with todays players.

where do you guys think he will be playing at fs for us? you guessed it way off the ball. this guy is not meant for the Cowoys defense. rarely looks for the ball and trys for a big hit too much.

I didn't say the video was meant to be a ringing endorsement of Mays. I said it showed how far off the ball he was asked to play and how many times he was playing as the lone deep safety.

Oh I know, I was just stating an observation.

He is awful when the ball is in the air. He is sluggish changing direction and can't tackle. I wasn't against drafting him until I saw this.

Burnett or bust.

I think he should move to ILB. He likes to blitz, can cover sideline to sideline for a run better than the pass, and would be an asset in pass coverage on a TE or FB much more so than as a deep Safety.

USCs scheme does in fact limit him, but not enough to think he is Palumalu II.

All can be coached up. NEXT!

Somebody in CZ will probably be saying that again in 3 or 4 seasons after he's been released.

I dont think Chris would hype his guy just b/c he has dreams of Mays vertical leap in white under armour.

But just seeing him try and stick w/ the WR's in the senior bowl he looked to have poor hips and change of direction. I could see him being a Laron Landry

I think someone once said that about Chris Johnson's prospects...
