Our look at the D2 prospects is coming tomorrow once Ansah's workout is complete. Several prospects impressed heavily improving their stock while others failed to impress and are falling while some solidified what many of us thought about them coming in. Here is a brief look at a few prospects and how they fared.
RISERS
TE Clay Harbor, Missouri State- Harbor continued his impressive play in the all-star games and appears to have a solid 3rd-5th round grade showing good speed, hands, and athleticism in drills. He finished near or at the top of nearly all the drills among the tight ends. He finished atop the tight end standings in the vertical (40) and bench reps (30) while finishing second in the broad jump (10'0). He also posted a solid 4.37 20-yard shuttle. His combine and all-star game performances certainly were impressive and should keep people from moving him to fullback and keep him either at tight end or h-back.
WR Donald Jones, Youngstown State- Jones struggled in the Senior Bowl and was injured at the Texas vs. Nation Game, making his combine performance crucial to his chances of being drafted. Good news for Jones is that he showed well in several drills finishing first among receivers in the bench press (20), second in the vertical (41.0), and ran a solid 4.5 in the 40-yard dash looking very impressive at the weigh-ins as well. His film and results here should still land him in the late rounds and even if he does fall out of the draft he certainly has the athletic ability that should ultimately land him a spot on a 53-man roster or practice squad.
DE Arthur Moats, James Madison- It is hard to believe that Moats was not in the first wave of invites to the combine after the season he had in which he produced 90 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and two blocked kicks to earn the 2009 Buck Buchanan Award. Scouts are glad he did indeed get an invite after the performance he put up measuring in at 6'0 1/4, 246 pounds, and 33 3/4-inch arm. His 4.57-4.66 in the 40-yard dash between hand-held and electronic clocks only helped solidify what most expected and that is the fact he can fly. Moats has vaulted up to #7 on the JBS Big Board with a 5th round projection thanks to his 40-yard dash, 24 reps of 225, and how well he looked in the drill. If Moats were just 6'3, he would carry a late 2nd or early 3rd round grade at this point.
FALLERS
RB Pat Paschall, North Dakota State- Ran poorly in the 40-yard dash and did not test well on the bench press. While he made up for that with explosiveness shown in the broad jump (9'10) and vertical (38.5) his 4.71 40-yard dash likely puts him very late in the draft, if selected at all, especially when you consider the fact he did have that altercation during the season showing that he does have a hot temper.
CONFIRMATIONS
QB John Skelton, Fordham- Ran a little better than expected at 4.85, some projected a 4.9, and had a 33.5-inch vertical and 9'0 broad jump showing good athletic ability but nothing special to make anyone think he is not mainly a pocket passer. Showed off a strong arm and was inconsistent with his throws, as expected. Was considered a 5th-6th round prospect entering the combine and while he needs a lot of work and is probably not draftable at this point, he showed that he has enough tools to warrant that expected 5th-6th round selection.
OT Vladimir Ducasse, UMASS- Ducasse was considered a road grading right guard by scouts entering the combine and did nothing to show that he is quite ready to play tackle yet. He did show natural bend, which coaches love, and had 29 reps of 225 pounds to show that he is strong like we expected. He definitely solidified at least a second round grade and should be a starter at guard early in his career and develop into a nice backup at tackle.
WR Andre' Roberts, The Citadel- Roberts was very impressive posting 10'0 broad jump, 4.46 40-yard dash, and 6.77 3-cone while posting less than impressive results in the bench press (15). He showed what we all expected that he is quick, can change direction but needs to get stronger and more consistent. His third round grade entering the combine seems to have held up and been solidified. Although, someone seeking a quick slot receiver who can help immediately on special teams could reach for him late in the second round.
