Cade Otton
6-5, 250
Decent blocker, decent receiver.

Projected to the 3rd round.

Not sure that I see the top 2 in this draft as significantly better than Otton.

This is a great draft for TE's, tons of them that will go Rounds 3 through 5, which makes the Schultz Franchise Tag decision even weirder.

I like UCLA 's Greg Dulchich, who coincidentally, reminds me of Schultz.

Ohio State TE Jeremy Ruckert is solid and a mean, physical blocker.

Virginia's Jelani Woods is intriguing and I think Iowa State's Charlie Kolar can be special on seam routes.

I can name 4-5 guys off the top of the head that I think are at least the equivalent of Dalton Schultz:

Ruckert
Ferguson
Kolar
Otton
Wydermyer
Chase Allen (one of my sleepers)

And then there are some others that I think can bring much more as a receiver than Schultz, such as Woods, Dulcich, and McBride.

I like Kolar…adequate but not elite athlete but dude has elite length and a monster catch radius with soft hands.

He’s Uber productive from a fairly decent conference and seems to understand how to sit in zones.

I think he’s give us what Schultz does + be a better red zone target.

Not sure how good a blocker he is.

Yes to all of those guys and add in Likely and Wydermyer.

Not sure exactly what position you call them, maybe H-back, but Chig Okonkwo and Connor Hayward could be very intriguing additions.

Not a TE1 down the line but love 6’8 Austin Allen as a productive blocking TE2 for a long time.

Im a big fan of Kolar…the blocking is pretty bad right now.
But he has good size and doesn’t shy away from contact/there isn’t a lack of effort so I’d assume there’s hope he can become adequate in the future.

Jelani Woods and Austin Allen both strike as me guys who are either incredibly hard to defend TE's or possible Tackle converts.

I'm a Michigan State alum so very familiar with Hayward, plus I liked his dad. He's been a tailback, kick returner, and tight end for Michigan State. I'd love him as a verstaile fullback here.

TE’s usually have steep development on the next level. Not a fan if Shultz, but they needed a veteran starter.

Otton was the Husky's leading receiver last year, That production from the TE position is impressive,

There's a bunch of guys who all have similar grades IMO.

I think Trey McBride is easily the best receiver of the bunch and is the only guy with difference maker potential. Even then, I cooled on him after he checked in at a smallish 245. After that, there's like 6 guys in R3 and R4 who project as useful players. All of them could easily offer what Dalton Schultz does if you give them a season or two.

That last part is why TE is kind of a frustrating position... it's low value, but it's also hard to learn. I liked the Cowboys' strategy of spending Day 3 picks and UDFAs on TEs and keeping a pipeline of really cheap talent going. A Jarwin, Schultz, Geoff Swaim, etc, could spend a couple seasons as a bit player while bulking up and learning blocking assignments, then take a bigger role around year 3. Sean McKeon looks like the next guy off this line. I'd rather let Schultz walk and let McKeon and a rook play next year, rather than pay Schultz big money. But here we are.

Great class for TEs. Really hope we get one to pair with Schultz.

It's very possible Shultz could just be a 1yr place holder until McKeon or a prospect is ready.

It appears rd's 3-5 seem like a very good area to land a future starting TE and even a Linebacker.
