TE should be the 1 Target

I'd love to upgrade the position....be careful on expectations for a rookie TE though, outside of QB its probably the toughest position to adjust to the NFL.

TE is a weird position in that it both has a long learning curve and brings low value.

If you look at the first round TEs in the past, none of them none would be redrafted as high again today. Pitts is a different dude and he's going to be a star, but Noah Fant, Hock, Evan Engram, OJ Howard, Ebron... none of those guys lived up to expectations. They were all drafted to be the next Travis Kelce and none of them are half of Kelce. I still have some hope for the Iowa guys if they get in different passing offenses, but that also shows you how dependent TEs are on the guys around them.

I like the way the Cowboys have been playing it.... get cheap TEs, and have them ride the bench for 1-2 years while they bulk up in the weight room and learn blocking assignments. I'm all for taking another cheap stab at it this year. Paying a vet in FA isn't the worst idea either, as he's already come up the learning curve and will be ready to contribute way faster than a rook.

Disagree.

There's some misses in the names you referenced but Hockenson was a Pro Bowler last year. Fant hasn't played with any QB stability whatsover and still has put up very respectable numbers; Ebron has been a Pro Bowler and had some good seasons; Engram has been erratic and Howard just never emerged.

IMO, Good TE's take a year or two to develop.

They come in and need to learn a new playbook and lets face it usually all receivers take a little bit to develop.
They also need to learn to be an Olineman and all the blocking techniques.
They also need to get stronger like most all rookies whose muscles haven't hardened yet and aren't at full strength. Some guys take longer to get their full build.

But what do you have now but an average receiving TE?

McKeon is slow as an O-Linemen.

Schultz is one of our best receivers. The problem is hes the worst blocker ive ever seen in the NFL at TE.

I would draft a great blocking TE in the 3rd or 4th (Ferguson from Wisconsin) and still keep Schultz as a receiver.

Schultz is gone. We have to be able to run the ball and he has to be one of the worst blocking TE's in the game. No power and no leverage and he can't even block a DB. He will go to someone who wants a receiving TE. Sadly Jarwin although bigger looks like Tarzan but blocks like Jane.

When you watch teams that have strong running games they all have good TE’s on the edge. It’s such an underrated position in the run game. I have watched Schultz miss his block so many times. And, sprinkle and Mckean are not NFL players. It’s a big weakness on our team. A bigger, stronger TE would also help Dak. He lacks a security blanket underneath. I can’t tell you how many times I see Lamb, Cooper, Gallup 20-25 yards downfield and there’s no outlet. We need a true game wrecker at TE.
I do believe we take a TE in the draft but seriously doubt it will be the 1st round. Who are those considered to be the best TE in the league right now, George Kittle or Travis Kelse or Rob Gronkowski or maybe a couple of others. None of them were 1st round guys. You can and will get great TE all through the draft but 1st round should be LT or S or OC for us in 2022.

We need a Te who can go up and get a ball and score in the red zone.

We can't beat any contenders with this scheme as long as it's being led by checkdown tes who don't have any big play or scoring capabilities against good teams.

These Tes are playing every passing snap. They are producing but it's not Winning production by any means.

1 playoff Td in 20+ years in a losing effort is not a winning formula good blocker or not

It's a high priority but it's probably not my choice for 1st round.

Schultz is good and it takes a TE years to develop. You don’t get a quick return on investment.

Offensive line is our top priority imo.
I’m with you. It’s offensive line maybe 2. But I wouldn’t mind a TE in the 2nd or 3rd. I also wouldn’t mind a RB in fact my first needs are oline,TE,RB

McKeon appears to be a bit quicker than Schultz.

TE is a position that tends to have limited options in the draft.
- Teams need be on the look out for 1 every year, but if a team goes into the draft dead set to get one, then they'll likely end up significantly over-drafting one.
- i.e. Teams have to wait until the right players becomes available. That won't happen every year for teams drafting late in the round.

Howard looked like he was going to be a stud until he kept getting hurt
