The big run we gave up to Foster was an alignment mistake, apparently. I do think one of the reasons we switched defensive schemes was to get to a simpler system that could be played by more players with less familiarity with the scheme. This was the season after we were picking up Ss and playing them significant snaps on Sunday after 5 days on the roster and right after the CBA renegotiation changed the rules for practicing players and bringing them along for a full season.

Offensively, yes, a lot of the problems were Dez and KO. We solved that by KO going away and Dez getting better over time with his adjustments. I don't doubt that the zone blocking scheme simplified the protections that were being called at the line, too. Plus, this year, we're running the ball more.

The secondary has still had that on a few occasions (mostly MO as someone said) but it is nowhere near the level it has been... Or at least I have not noticed it as much.

Ryan still has problems with blown coverages. Like the Saints when nobody was covering Devin Street. Or in the Saints game against the Browns final play before the Browns kicked the game winning FG...blown coverage had a receiver wide open.

With that said, I think that is part of the process with a defensive scheme like Ryan's versus what Marinelli does. Ryan and D-Coordinators like him try to out-scheme. Marinelli tries to get athletes to hustle.

Offensively, I think it helps that we have a center that has a clue. Tough to have a center like Gurode who was good for 2-3 awful games a year because he handles the ball every down. And he didn't even call line adjustments. I also think a lot of this is due to Garrett being the HC instead of Wade. Wade would just call it a day if the offense kept screwing it up and would tell them to go and watch film. Garrett is more about making them continue to practice it until they get it right. We don't do a lot of shifting anyway. And the receivers have mostly been in our system for a while (Dez since 2010, Harris, Witten, etc).

I will say that it seems that we get less bad movement on those last second audibles from Romo. It seems more like those last second audibles hurt Romo more than anything because he sometimes forgets the basics of the situation because he's too busy audibling. But, we are not seeing those false starts and illegal procedure penalties. However, that may be due to us running more. A lot less likely to get those penalties on running plays.

YR

Or the OC telling Romo to run the play as its called rather than Romo adjusting the plays based on what he sees on defense.

Still some work to do though in this department but it's getting better. I didn't honestly think it was smart for Harris to bring the ball out of the end zone that wasted precious seconds at the end of the game. Also, add to the the fact that he didn't get the ball to the 20 yard line which made it even harder to drive down the field for the offense.

I remember a horrific a delay of game followed by a bone head intentional grounding....

nearly blew the game bc of that sequence of plays

Right. A delay of game right after a timeout. :banghead: ZERO excuse for that.

The last 2 1/2 mins of the game did not look like a smart team in any way shape or form.

The process is showing some signs of improvement, but at a painfully slow pace.

Hey CC, good times at 4-1. Not a well executed game yesterday in many ways, but a win nevertheless. Its progress and a win. Something to build on. Stacking wins on top of wins.

This fan appreciates and is starting enjoy watching again...

Can anyone remember the last time someone was lined up wrong?

I don't see Romo yelling and screaming at people. How many time outs or negative plays happened all because someone was in the wrong spot?

Was it all Kevin Ogletree?

How many guys on defense would point, or wave or throw their hands up before the snap?

Was it all Rob Ryan's scheme?

I think we have smarter people on our team.

:lmao:

We do have smarter football players and better coaching at every level beneath the HC who now focuses specially on being a HC.

We execute better for all these reasons.

Oh and we don't have a left tackle who can't hear out of one of his ears anymore.

It is enjoyable and not just because we are winning games. For the most part after week 1 we have seen a team play well and play smart overall. Yesterday we didnt play our best yet it seemed as if we should have had a pretty substantial lead late in the game. The defense was exposed some, and the series starting at 2:27 left in the game was ridiculous. That series was almost groundhog day from the Detroit and Green Bay games we remember all too well. But this team overcame and got in position to win it in regulation and when that didnt happen made it happen in OT. Some frustration in watching but in the end reason to celebrate and look forward to Seattle.

Im with you CC, enjoying it!

The less Red J does on game day the better, and its showing. Too bad we didnt have the same scenario in Year 1, and Year 2, and Year 3 of the Process. Might have won 3 division titles and be going for our 4th straight this year.

Should have, would have, could have I guess.

At the end of the day Red never really had his coaches the 1st couple of years. I'm not making excuses for him but it is the truth.

Having experienced and proven coaches like Marinelli, Linehan, Kiffin, Callahan, Robinson, Pope and the rest of the position coaches helps shape a whole team and philosophy.

When you don't have the guys available to help coach and promote your philosophy on all angles of the team then the chances are you're going to have to involve yourself more so at the coordinator and positional coaching levels. When you're spreaded out thin tending to the grass roots because you don't have your coaches then you tend to neglect some of the things that need the detail as a HC, especially game days.

We attempted the kick on 3rd down. What that did was avoid an offensive mistake but also gave us another shot on 4th down. That was Garrett's decision. Something like that in the past was not considered as the HC was involving himself on things a capable OC like Linehan would be taking responsibility for.

I've been a Garrett critic but I think the way he has things structure with this staff and how we're developing this team at this point, this season. I have to take my hat off to him. I have not felt out coached in any game so far this season.

Minus the player miscues, INT's and fumbles this team has looked very prepared and has played right to the last second even into 5 quarters of football. The wheel is looking pretty good on the coaching front right now. I wouldn't change a thing about it at this point.

Ah that scapegoat. Yes flozell was deaf in one ear his left. I think he was getting old and had to face some of the best pass rushers in the league and to make up for age he tried to get a jump on the count.

Jason Garrett has made player intelligence a big factor into who he drafts and targets in Free Agency. That's why I think Claiborne was a Jerrysplash pick.

It's paying off.

Hate to tell you, Ogletree was JG's guy. Not only he (specifically his brother) brought him here as an UDFA, he brought him back again when Ogletree was a FA.

Coordinators are better. Talent has matured and improved but still bad signs: delay of game by Romo? Garrett not using timeouts at the end?

When they tied it ,I said to myself Thank God they scored.because our bozo head coach was going to let all the time run out.

We're winning on talent and better coordinators.
