We already heard that Jerry Jones wants the team to target immediate impact starters and wants no part of high upside, developmental picks. Clearly, he sees his window closing for him and his franchise QB. This could also be way he has been talking up about spending more in fa this yr. Some insiders also believe he saw what Seattle/New England did last offseason in fa and make a quick turnaround.

We all hated the Booker selection last year, not cause of the player, but not taking a premium position so how in the draft. As it turned out, Booker was an excellent selection where he was good as soon as he hit the field. Throw out drafting premium positions this year as the top of the draft is full of question marks at all positions. Take the best player period!

Downs is the perfect example of the type of player they are looking to draft. Might not have the upside potential, but he will be impactful as soon as he hits the field. Some think he could be a top 5 safety by the end of his rookie season.

Which other players will fit this profile being day 1 impact starters having a high floor but limited upside potential?

Edge rushers rarely make immediate impact but Bain might be an exception but he will be miscast as an OLB.imo Safety and Corner will make immediate impact.

Zion Young.

Young’s physical tools and rugged demeanor give him a chance to be an instant run-stopping upgrade with average rush.

Dillon, Allen, Rodriguez, Bain, Howell, Mesidor, McCoy, McNeil-Warren, Johnson. Hood, and Delane. I think the Cowboys will get two of these guys and all could start for us day one.

I think you play Bain in the wide 9 alignment like he was used with Miami.

At 12 you can probably have both immediate impact and upside. Downs has a high floor, but there is still a very high ceiling.

Theineman could be a possibility now at 12.

McCoy is a polished CB. Just depends on how confident they are in his knee

Cisse or Hood could come in and play at decent level. Guys like those two could be where you really benefit from Parker

Philly did use that alignment more under Gannon if I remember correctly.
Jim Schwartz is the wide 9 guru, I think Gannon just used some wide 9 after taking over. The Cardinals switched to a 3-4 under Gannon.

As far as this thread: the good news is we have so many holes on D that it’s going to be difficult to NOT draft an immediate starter.

Avieon Terrell
Terrell projects as an early starter thanks to his polish, ball skills and coverage versatility.

Chris Johnson
Johnson’s coverage versatility, toughness and athleticism should make him an early starter for a coverage-hungry team.

They need ILB that can direct the defense, and a ball hawking safety

Theineman is a guy that I really do like a lot for Parker’s defense, but I liked him before the combine as well. He played very good starting as soon as he hit the field in his true freshman season, and watching his games easily shows an exceptional player, I think.

He is very good both above the neck and below the neck. His obvious football IQ and his ability to find (and get) the ball is impressive. That much is obvious on film.

For me, his combine showed and verified what I saw watching his games and solidified my opinion that he is a mid-first round guy.

If Parker evaluates Theineman and says that he thinks he’d be ideal for his nickel/rover spot, then I’d be perfectly at ease taking him at 12. Adding that kind of IQ/athleticism to the defense would be big time helpful in turning the Cowboys defense around.

I still don't love Thieneman's tape, but the freak show he put on in Indy was undeniable. Safeties rarely move like that... the ones that do usually end up at CB.

Anyway, the safety I am looking at at #12, no joke, is Downs. Safeties always fall, and Downs ducking the Combine may have opened up room for a few workout warriors to jump him.

Downs is still my #1 option at that position. He skipped the Combine workouts for a reason - his athleticism is nothing special for an NFL starter - but he's basically working on his football PhD whereas Thieneman is still kind of see-ball-get-ball reckless. And football IQ plays at safety all day.

One thing I will say, is if you're looking for a true nickel role, I like Thieneman for that more than I like Downs. Thieneman's got the man-cover talent you want there, and of course he's a dawg in run defense. I like Downs when he's hanging back deep, and I LOVE Downs when he's lurking in the box and basically playing LB, but I don't like him matched up 1-on-1 in the slot.

I saw a mock today that had us taking Terrell and Thieneman... not a ton if value but a draft I could certainly get on board with that is realistic.

I am very close to moving Terrell up to my CB1 spot. His knock all along has been size and is now verified as the same size as Delane and plays more physical against the run. For a team that might be going after a nickel I think he provides inside / outside versatility and is a dog against the run so might be a better fit.

I just dont see how Thieneman wont be a good pro. He was one of my guys early so glad to see more fans getting excited. He has been good for a long time in a variety of roles and just blew the doors off the combine. He would give us the most athletic and versatile safety we have had since...Woody?

I hope I don’t love Thieneman because I wished Justin Beriault could only have stayed healthy…

We have to get lucky and get one of the Downs, Bains types fall to 12. We generally have luck like that when we pick that early.
