Teams need to stop drafting running backs in the first round

Interesting article, but seems a little self-serving. It seems to essentially say passing is better because more teams are passing. Of course rushing metrics are going down as teams get more pass happy. The league isn't just running less, they're devoting less resources and time to it. That means the talent level for runners, run blockers and run designers is declining at the same rate.

Passing wins the regular season, but defense and a good running game rule the post-season.

Excellent article. One can also see that by drafting CB Ramsey or a DL like Bosa helps in decreasing the Net Expected Points (NEP) of the opposing team's passing game.

agree with TextBumthelife.....

its like we say about everyone who comes out from behind the desk giving ideas based on paper, if you havent actually done it in real life - please go back to your desk.

There is alot more to the effect of running, as is passing, throwing, etc..... Successful run game, even if it is numerous 4 yard gains, is heartbreaking to defenses. They do wear down.I am not gonna get into all the details, but you have to be bias to the passing game to not see the reality of the importance of a good running game.Defenses wear out and wear down. When teams are one dimensional, defenses do catch on. Been like that since I started watching Cowboys and football in general back in 1981.
Yeah the rules have been changed so that defenses are less effective against the passing game, and that is the ONLY reason articles like this are even out there, but the running game is still just as important.
Football has become so watered down, you barely need to be any good at playing it anymore because the NFL will make it more offense friendly through rule changes and whatnot. It has taken from the game, but there is still some game to be played. And if the RB and defenses become any less important, then I am afraid this game will be for the kiddos. Be like Wrestling where we adults know it is all fake, but kids still enjoy it. LOL

Not sure why I went there, but RBs are still a good portion of the game and a guy like Elliot can be a huge reason for success in this game.

I agree with the article but running the ball is vital in this scheme because we simply don't do anything special with our routes.

We need to impose our will on the ground because we aren't tricking anyone through the air.

Teams just need to draft the RIGHT running backs. Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Todd Gurley......not Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams, or Trent Richardson.

Fortunately, the league seems headed back that direction again. Denver and Seattle were pretty average passing teams.

The problem with these articles is that they almost assume the running back comes off the field on passing plays. They are conveniently cherry picking the data to make them seem more insightful than they actually are.

You can build a was smash-mouth, run the ball type of team and you will win. I don't care what the modern NFL is going to, the model that Jimmy went by in the 90's is a winning combination. 2014 was a snapshot of that.

Yep.

I think their #1 rated defenses explained a lot.
